I have a question for youse! How much time do you spend outside of the classroom working on your classes, grading papers, planning lessons, etc?

Should do: About 2-3 hrs.

Acutally do: About 0.5 hrs.

Coaching has really cut in on how much I can get done after school as well.

beings that I'm a PE teacher....not much.

It was quite a bit more when I was teaching history, however, see koby's post...coaching does dig into planning time.

I've got 2 brats... you only have the 1 (so far). Do you do fun field trips? They're going to Detweiler's farm to milk cows tomorrow. THAT'S going to be interesting. Confused

Yeah, cow milking...you've gotta love THAT! Smile

Yes, we have several field trips planned for this year. Living in the DC area there is a plethora of field trip spots! We went to the Freer Gallery of Art 2 weeks ago and viewed the Asian art. We are doing the "Five in a Row" unit studies and that week we were studying Japanese culture.

Cute story: After about 30 works of art that were "oil on canvas" we were standing in front of a piece of art and I asked my son what the medium was for this particular work of art. His response: "oil on canvas." This woman standing within ear shot heard his response and her eyes bugged out of her head ( Shocked ) and she said "WOW! That is one smart little boy!" Little did she know we had gone over this same topic at least 30 times! Smile

A LOT!!!

Lesson Planning: 2 hours a week at home. I take the time at home to study the curriculum manuals so I can do a nice job with my plans (& so I can get things ready to be copied during the day at the copy machine)
Grading papers: 3 hours a week at night.
Student Folders (where I send home bi-weekly progress reports academic/behavior): 5-6 hours every two weeks
Other odds/ends (coping paperwork, calling parents, sending/writing notes to students): 1-2 hours

All outside the classroom.

I get here around 6:30am most days and leave around 5pm. I budget my time wisely and am working on things non-stop. I get one 30 minute planning break and a 40 minute lunch. Otherwise...it's work, work, work.

I will be attending hours of inservices and other must do's as well outside of the work day (after school).

Does the grade affect how much time you spend?

I teach juniors and seniors. I would guess that younger kids need less prep and grading time. Am I wrong?

I teach 4 hours a week. Spend about 8-10 hours in preparation and school related stuff.

I would imagine it would be more prep time, less grading time for younger kids. If I had to teach young kids, I'd be sure that I filled each day's session and take no chance of not having something planned. At least with older students you can kind of make up stuff as you go.

Yeah. I kinda did that today. The anticipated stuff took an hour less then planned. Had to fill the last hour today. Ended up just having a club meeting and talking about contest stuff.

You are very wrong.

I used to have 1 prep when I taught 6th grade math all day long. Now I have 5 preps (math, engish, reading, social studies & science). It takes more time to study for each subject area. Before I could make up my plans and have one lesson per day to follow.

Younger kids take MORE prep and grading time. I teach music so I don't use as many worksheets as other classes, and I don't have kids copying definitions and writing sentences. I spend a lot of time looking for interesting activities and researching authentic styles of music. I see the classroom teachers in my building who are constantly grading papers. the younger the class, the more papers to check. and from my own experience in music class, the younger classes are more labor-intensive.
