Cheryl's post about eating made me think about this.....as a counselor, it always fascinated me that we're so willing to help cheer up a friend in need by bringing over pizza and beer and funny movies or giving them carte blanche for crisis hotline phone calls at 3AM or whatever to make them feel better when they're bumming, yet we tend so often to NOT take care of ourselves that way when it's our turn to be depressed. I thought I'd poll the masses to see what YOU do for yourself when you're really feeling crappy. Healthy or not, please post your favorite "coping" things.......guys, you too....I would love to see what the gender differences are here in how we deal with things!
My favorite girly thing to do is just take a couple hours, which I know for you with kids is hard, but.....and just do stuff for me: go for a run or do some yoga to relax, then jump into a nice bubble bath with a good trashy book to read, glass of wine or cup of herbal tea, depending on my mood, and just hang out with ME for a while, not having to do or think about anything. My point here is, do something as nice for yourself as you would do for someone ELSE you care about to make them feel better.
When I am at work, I LOVE going to the card store at the mall and standing and reading all the Shoebox greeting cards until I am almost wetting my pants laughing! It always works, and I usually end up buying a couple for some occasion or other! How about YOU?

Good thing you intended to buy them. The clerk told me if I peed on a greeting card I'd have to pay for it.

I hardly ever get 'down in the dumps'. About the closest emotional feeling to that I get, which is still very occasionally, is a bit stressed out at work. All I do is tell myself that if I make it through the rest of the day, I can look forward to talking with my wife, playing with my son, and getting a good night's sleep.

Going to sleep. I only get really down when I am worn down and tired. Sleep along with a nice nap or (krispy kreme as CB and Mega refer to them) will cure most of my blues.

I work out until everything hurts and then go home and soak in the tub and do the whole "body facial" thing complete with the latest issue of "Harper's" and a split. It works wonders.
A little "retail" therapy never hurts, either.
What's nice about the pamperingis it makes you feel so spoiled and good about yourself, you can't help but walking around with an "I am a goddess" attitude!

That's not just an attitude - that's your life! I bow to you...

Copeing things for me usually deal with some form of problem solving.
I get the majority of my work done while running.
I write most of my code in my head while running.
So running has been a great problem solving device.
Other things I tend to do deal with writing down the problem
and doing reasearch using books at Barnes & Noble.
Also finding query searchey using Google or Yahoo and going
to like web sites.
I also tend to meditate to clear away negative thoughts, and try to surround myself with people with postive energy to make my issues less a problem as others are pretty much in the same boat or sinking than me.

I run. Nothing like a LSD run for getting rid of stress . If I'm at work I just tend to go quiet and retreat into "my own little world" while plotting my escape .

I will take myself to a fancy-schmancy grocery store and buy myself some
new food I've never tried. And/or I will go to Barnes and Noble and buy myself a mag or book and a huge latte' and dessert and read the time away.
