So my first tri is coming up but one of the things that I haven't gotten nailed down yet is sighting while swimming. How does one practice sighting landmarks in the pool? In which part of the stroke do you look for landmarks?

I find when I need to sight it's straight ahead. If I have something on my left or right that I have to sight I just do that when I breath to that side. In a pool I would practice after you turn at the wall and sight on one of your first strokes. You can use the end of the lane as your maker to sight. I do it as if I were breathing but instead of turning my head to the side I lift it slightly and look straight ahead then continue turning and breathing. So I work it into my stroke. (If I'm desperate and way off mark and can't see anything in a race I switch to breast stroke to get my bearings. - This happens alot to me. Confused )

You can practice in the pool by keeping your eyes closed under water. Do I practice? No.

I sight by lifting my head and looking forward while taking a breath instead of turning it to the side. As you begin the pull under water, raise your head up and take a peak and inhale. As you finish your stroke you will be lowering your head again. Conditions will determine how often you have to sight; but, err on the side of sighting more often. Getting off course bites.

Hmmm, I do it just the opposite. But please notice that my name is not fla-tri

I take a breath, then as my head is going back into the water I rotate it to sight.

And it's MUCH different in a pool and in the open water.

I did lots of extra meters in my last tri for the same reason. I actually stopped several times to get straightened out. I was so spoiled by lane lines. I even tried to site the shore line but that was difficult without breaking my "stride"

I guess more open swimming would be in order, but that is very hard and not as safe as the pool I am sure.
