The boy got his driving permit Friday. He comes in the gym Friday asking when I get off and if I'll take him driving in the new Jeep. I just don't think I'd react properly if something happened. Hubby took him out Friday night and when I got home from work he said "he only went off the road twice." WTF???? Like it's no big deal. I've been dreading this and all my friends are like it will be so nice to not have to run him around and he can do errands for you and stuff. I just see bad things, I'm sorry. Am I being a MOM or what?
Tell me some stories guys. Do I have to listen?

Good luck
I won't be dealing with this issue for at least 7.5 more years.

currently teaching him to drive
PA requires that we log 50 hours together, plus he will start with a driver ed teacher at school for 6 more hours.
let's see, as of today we have 6 hours together. seems like 50.
my favorite line while driving with him: brake, brake, brake for the love of PETE HIT THE BRAKES OR WE'LL BOTH BE KILLED.
have fun.

Both my driving-aged kids totalled their respective cars withing a day of each other. I hope that helps calm your nerves.
neither of my kids was found at fault. Just a freak coincidence. Both of them got nicer cars out of the insurance settlement too.

David never drove off the road. He just got pulled over doing 60 in a 45 zone. With a car full of guys wearing dresses (he was the only one dressed normally). On a Sunday. Going to church.

You just have to cloes your eyes and let him go on his own. Our son drove with us for a long time before he got to drive on his own.
Here in NYS drives under 18 cannot be out after 2100 during school days Unless they are going home after a school function. No more than one teenage rider in the car too. We got our son his grandads old Datsun (yes a Datsun) he drove it for about 3 years until it eventually died. The car was not able to go faster than about 60 and was not reliable enough for long trips.
We got our daughter a GEO Metro: 3 cylinders not good for distances.
The rewards: NO more going to school to pick up, no more driving to soccer, after school activities etc etc.

Another reason to be glad I wasn't born a Lutheran.

Goodness! Good luck surviving the next few months!
My b-i-l Cody dropped out of school after the death of his father in January. He's 16 on the 27th of this month. All summer my m-i-l told him if he didn't go to school the '04-'05 school year he wasn't driving.
Right.
She took him to get his temp. Friday. He has refused to go to school at all. Way to parent!

My mom allowed me to drive around an empty parking lot once going probably no faster than 15 mph. Then she hired someone to teach me how to drive. She and her nerves couldn't handle it.
I was probably as old as 17 when I ran off the road for the first time...

I learned to drive when I was 14. Unless you count the lawn mowers and farm tractor. Then it was more like 8 and 12 respectivly.
I had gotten many hours of time behind the wheel on the farm. This was with a truck that had poor brakes, no e-brake, manual transmission, and occasionaly power steering. When I got my permit, my parents were already comfortable with me driving a road worthy car. At least that farm truck taught me how to think quick in case something important brakes (like the brakes).
Advice? I like the parking lot idea. That's where I learned. Driving circles and never going over 20. You get to pull into parking spots, back out, pull up to a curb, pretend lines are vehicles, etc.
