will soon be ruling on whether 16 to 17 year olds can be executed. They decided sometime ago that people 15 and under can't be. And it's clear people 18 and over can be. But this middle group is not covered, apparently.

So do you feel that executing people in this range qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment or that it's OK?

And PS don't post if you can't take dissenting opinion.

I don’t think executing people is ever okay.

I've thought long and hard about this and have finally come around to this side as well.

Right, I agree. But just looking at it objectively, is there a reason to protect people of that age group in a way that people slightly older don't get?

So do you think that our penal/justice system can reform all criminals to become productive members of society or should we just lock them up & throw away the key?

I'm firmly on the fence on go's original issue.

I say no.

18 is the legal standard for adulthood. I figure we might as well show a little consistency.

I'm kind of on the 'throw away the key' line of thinking.

I'm on the fence on the original too.

I believe in capital punishment. I also believe that 16, 17 a bit young. We all did stupid things then. 18+ OK, <18 no.

I don't think keeping people in prison forever is the answer. I'm not a fan of the death penalty, but I think it's necessary. Prison for life is practically a free ride for those that had terrible living conditions before. I hardly think going to jail is an effective punishment when they [possibly] receive an increase in the standard of living without having to pay for it.

On the other hand, I think people that thirst for death are absolutely disgusting. The serial killer trials have been going on here in Baton Rouge and not a night goes by where they don't show some member of a victim's family on the news swearing that they'll have death and nothing else. And I hate to see it.

As for this topic specifically, 18 and older only. If you're a minor you shouldn't be able to die, period. I wouldn't mind the age being raised to 21.

See? you DO have opinions!! no go vote! Mr. Green

I don't think the current system works, I agree that jail/prison works as means to a great life for some, most definitely. I'm sure there is a lot to be reformed there. I just have a problem with "an eye for an eye".

PS is that the trial for the guy who killed like 6 or so women around your area over a year ago?

If you commit an adult crime you should accept adult consequences

Yeah. They just concluded the second trial this week. It took the jury all of 93 minutes to decide to execute him.

if certain conditions apply then yes. For example, killing with mulitple murders, police officers but otherwise, give them adult sentences in adult prisons.

Must of the crap they kill for is stupid anyway. Give them 20-25 long years for the most part. But I hate to take away the option of a death sentence in the above two.

I personally feel that the death penalty is wrong. (No surprise there.) But from a purely practical standpoint, it's SO MUCH more expensive to the taxpayers than keeping someone in jail for life.

Is that because of all the appeals that are involved?
