Sunday morning, Rubberlegs & I met up for what turned out to be the coldest race I've ever run. -6F degrees and windchills below that! Not too productive for fast times. It was a small group of around 50 runners. I took off way too quick as normal. Not too far off the leaders, 6:11, then settled into a 6:41 for the second mile, and 7:07 for the final 1.1. I was ninth place much of the time and reeled in eighth place on the home stretch. The clocked clicked right to 20:00 as I came to the line and I see in the results the official was 20:01. I had ran a 20:02 last month, so at least it's forward progress
Looking forward to more Minnesota racing with RL.. btw, he smashed his first 5km race goal!!

Good job John and Rubberlegs!
BTW - I think -6°F is the point at which hell freezes over. There's no way I'd race at that temp.

Great job to you both! That is damn cold. Not for me, that's for sure. Maybe the two of you can roadtrip to Madison together!

Great job guys! Making any kind of progress in -6F temps is a huge accomplishment.

Minus 6 sounds cool.
I would love to race that cold. I would though be going to that race alone. I would not want any spectators to cheer me on there

well I intended to write up a long and creative race report, but my morning has been filled with real work related stuff, so I haven't been able to goof off to my usual potential.
Race was pretty much as John described. Note I took 4th in my age group overall, right behind John in fact who was third. Just ignore the fact that there was a difference of almost 5 and a half minutes between us.
I don't recall my splits but they were pretty closely split around 8:30 per mile. My intention was to go out steady the first half and then start picking people off the second. Unfortunately, there were only two people within reach at the turn around. I picked them both off within a mile and the couldn't even see the next person in front of me he was so far ahead. So I was pretty much running my own race the last mile or so.
This was my first 5K and my goal was just to have fun and break 30 minutes. I've been hitting 10 minute miles for my training runs, so I was pretty confident I would have no problem with this, but I didn't want to set any crazy goals for my first race. I ended up finishing with a time of 25:27. I'm very pleased with that for a starting point.
Had a great time and look forward to improving on my time. I'm hoping the next race I hit will fall on a slightly warmer day.
P.S. Really enjoyed meeting John. He's a really nice guy and even stood around at the finish line for five minutes freezing his patooters off waiting for me to finish. Great guy. I look forward to meeting many more Riff Raffers. Trying to convince the wife that Madison would be a fun time for her too.
