Richmond is beautiful!
Saturday morning I awoke at 6:15, showered and drove 15 minutes from where I was staying to Carytown in Richmond. I parked my car, walked around a little, got a cup of coffee, checked and re-checked my gels (still shorted myself by one, but that's another story.
Checked my bag, and I found the 3:30 pace crew.
Weather was perfect, 49 °F and overcast with a very slight breeze.
Start was announces, and we were off.
Mile 1 7:54, pretty much right were I wanted to be, but I was closer to the 3:15 pace guy than the 3:30 guy.
Mile 2 7:46, pretty fast but i am feeling pretty good.
Mile 3 7:39, still pretty fast, but I feel great.
Mile 4 7:36. I hook up with this guy Jeff, we have the same goal time , so we decide to pace one another (at this point the 3:30 pace team is a little too erratic for me)
Mile 5 no marker
Mile 5-6 15:18, still a little fast, but we are just motoring along
Mile 7 7:26
Mile 8 7:43
Mile 9 7:41
Mile 10 7:50 (some uphill)
Mile 11 8:14 (more uphill)
mile 12 8:04
Mile 13 7:57
Half 1:42:06 I am about 3 minutes faster than my goal, but I figure that I might need them later (I was right)
mile 14 7:57
Mile 15 7:49 I lose my pace partner Jeff, He stops to gel-up, but he never catches up.
Mile 16 8:28
Mile 17 8:11
Mile 18 8:08 I still feel real strong.
Mile 19 8:15
Mile 20 8:11 What wall? 2:38:15 almost 2 minutes ahead of needed split
Mile 21 8:21 Ouch, my left knee hurts!
Mile 22 8:25 I was worried about this mile, but the dreaded calf cramps never turned up, but I did have a tube of icy-hot just in case*.
Mile 23 8:23
Mile 24 8:13
Mile 25 8:48 Why are my hands arms and face numb?
Mile 26 8:23 How can .2 miles look so far????
Finish 3:30:24 A new PR, and thirty minutes faster than NYCM 13 days ago! An 8:02 average pace
3 things I learned from this marathon.
One, you run with someone who might be a bit faster than you can payoff big time (thanks Jeff, wherever you are)
Two, I need too get tougher with the whole weather thing. I am a real wuss if the weather is a bit too hot.
Three, I finished strong, and I should have broked 3:30. Next time I will.
Woo-hoo!
I am hobbling around on a painful left knee, I am going to ice it up and hope for the best. If it doesn't feel better by Wednesday, to the doctor I will go
* thanks Pebbs!

Smoking Time is right!
Great job to you and I don't know how you did it with such a short time after your NYCM. Kudos to you!

Monk, first off congratulations on your 3h.30m. Marathon
Hope you don't mind me making some comments on your race. I was interested in your individual mile times; this is terrific information to acess your overall performance and great ammunition for when you saddle up for your next marathon.
Given that you just dipped out on breaking the 3:30, would you still run two marathons in two weeks?
My thoughts were that to break 3:30 you went through the half way at exactly the right pace. So why did you dip out by 25 secs.
Some possible reasons 1. the NYCM two weeks previous 2. not enough training miles (to cope with two marathons) in the bank. For what its worth, I think it is probally a combination of the both. 3 You loosing your pacing partner at mile 15. have a look at how your next mile drops away.
You loose over 30 secs.Where as its nice to stick together marathoning is an indivudal sport and you have no obligation to hang around when your mate drops off. To your credit you get back on track over the next mile and go through 18 miles feeling strong.
What happened 24 to the 25 mile mark? the wheels really fell off and you lost more valueable seconds here that could have taken you under the 3:30 mark.
You don't need me to tell you how to run a marathon you have already done that, but I would ask you to take the following on board.
No more than two marathons a year, at least 4 months apart.
It's a thinking mans/womans game running, you need to concentrate from start to finish - acess and re-acess as you run; how I feel; weather, wind changing conditions etc;
Even pacing (your mile times are a dogs breakfast)
Please don't take any of this as criticism, I only post these random thoughts because I reckon you will muck in a sub 3:30 next time

Thanks for the input.

Yes. I think part of the reason that I pr'd by about 12 minutes is because Marathon 1 made me stronger, both physically and mentally.

Some possible reasons 1. the NYCM two weeks previous 2. not enough training miles (to cope with two marathons) in the bank. For what its worth, I think it is probally a combination of the both. |
I am inclined to lean towards 2. I felt very strong, stronger than my previous 3 marathons, so I don't think 2 weeks rest between marathons was a large factor. I was not overly satisfied with my preparation, I wanted to get in more long runs, and do more speed work. I got in a grand total of one 20 miler and a handful of 15 -17 milers. I was intending on getting in at least 3-4 20-22 milers, but alas, the life of a family man...
| Quote: | | 3 You loosing your pacing partner at mile 15. have a look at how your next mile drops away. |
Yes, we were discussing how are pace was a bit faster than we thought it should be yet we did not really adjust, I think we were pushing each other a bit. Once he dropped off, I think I tried to adjust my pace a bit once alone for fear that my calfs would cramp again around mile 22. I also don't think I paid enough attention to my splits.

Thanks. I think part of the problem was that I underestimated my own strength. I had a lot more in the tank so to speak than I thought I had.
| Quote: | | What happened 24 to the 25 mile mark? the wheels really fell off and you lost more valueable seconds here that could have taken you under the 3:30 mark. |
Again, I did not pay enough attention to my watch, I think I may have mentally let down a bit. When I hit mile 25, I realized that I would have to push really hard in order to break 3:30. I also think I was a bit complacent, I knew I was going to pr by a large margin, and going into this marathon I had my doubts about being able to break 3:30, I was half way thinking that I would be closer to 3:45. It might have had something to do with my disappointing finish at NYCM 13 days prior.

I have heard that before, and you are probably right. My knee pain right now is most likely tendonitis, which is probably a result of too much to soon. But I also believe that the individual can gauge what is too much and what is not. I know I can handle and enjoy more than two Marathons per year, and don't need 4 months between them. Two weeks is a bit close, but I think I could easily handle 4 weeks. I recover very fast, and will feel close to 100% by thursday the latest.

Absolutely. I am learning as I go.

Is there anything sweeter than a new marathon Pr?!
The Ultima did it, no?
A couple more time shavings like that off your Pr and you'll be Beantown bound
