They call em Half Marathons up here. Down South we call em Minis. Go figure...

I grew up in South Bend, so I brought my daughter up to run the race. Well, I ran the race, she and my parents cheered me on.

Ok my goals for the race were:

Go out slow(er), end strong, keep the knee from hurting (good form), beat the 1:54 from a month ago.

Well, I'm not disappointed, but I would have liked to have done better. I got across the line JUST under 2:00 at 1:59:16 on my watch. So a sub-2:00 is always a good effort, and I certainly gave it my best. But some days I guess you've got it, and other days you don't. Very Happy

The knee doesn't hurt at all... good thing. And I did start out slower and end stronger, so I guess two out of three ain't bad, is it?

It's a really great race with good support, lots of water stops (actually the stop at mile 10 had Gatorade, water, bananas, AND gel, and there were people with Vaseline all along the course), well-organized (started right on time, packet pickup was a breeze, well staggered start area, TONS of volunteers), and the course is quite nice (LOTS of shade), although it has two loops in it. It starts downtown at the College Football Hall of Fame, winds around a few blocks downtown and then heads north along the river to Pinhook Park, where it loops back, heads south to the ND boathouse, and then loops back up to Notre Dame. The ending mile was great as you head up Notre Dame Avenue towards the Golden Dome, take a right, and end on the quad between the stadium and the library under the watchful gaze of Touchdown Jesus.

The weather was great, blue skies, 60-65 degrees. It was a perfect Northern Indiana day.

I don't have quite the race memory that some of you all do, yeesh how do you do it? LOL. Actually all I remember is the foot aching around Mile 5, the leg starting to ache around 7, the Glutes starting to go at 9, and at 10.5 I was ready to quit! LOL man that sucks when you just want to walk back to the car and go home.

Actually, unlike the last Mini, this was rather uneventful. No running Elvises, no girls needing GU instruction, no Superman cheering us on...but it was a great crowd, and it was fun, and very glad I came to run in my own hometown.

I write the race report while I'm racing, then just come home and type out what's already written.

Good job on your half/mini! :w00t:

That's what I do too! It keeps me from thinking too much about the race itself, unless it's a 5k, which is too short for thinking, only about how much farther is the end, and where is that 3rd mile marker?

Good race report! Good to run in your home town too. Nice time on your half/mini-thon!
