I opt for hot coals. Sure they take longer but the final product is so very much better.
I realize that some folks might be restricted by apartment or development regulations in making this choice.
What's your choice?

Baked potatoes, and roasted corn, in the coals are the best!

It depends on what is being grilled. For something quick where the taste isn't altered too much (i.e. chicken breasts or fish) I'd say gas. For red meat and whole chickens, definitely charcoal. For pork shoulder, you MUST use a smoker, which requires wood and coals for the taste to be correct. (Then again, I'm married to a former chef and love to cook myself, so we are a little fussier than your average bears when it comes to taste and flavors). Also, the best smoked salmon is that which you prepare yourself overnight in the smoker.

We use a smoker when we can.
Otherwise I have a wonderful gas grill bought for me last summer for my birthday.

Charcoal and hickory. I think my dad would have a stroke if I used a gas grill.

coals are the best, and I have a very small portable charcoal grill that we take camping.
However, I usually use the gas grill. Just quicker, and easier.

We use gas most of the time. The boyz will eat no meat unless it's grilled. DH does use coals for some stuff that takes longer.
