Posted: 05/11/05 - 11:22 Post subject: Summer backpacking
I am planning on backpacking part of the Appalachian trail this summer. I'll probably start at the beginning in Georgia and see how far North I can go in the two months I have available. If anyone is interested in hiking a piece, you're more than welcome to join me on the trail. Once my data book comes in I can figure out estimated dates for when I will be in specific places. Let me know if you would want to do some hiking. Plans aren't definite, but there's probably a 90% chance I am going.

matts cousin did this after his college graduation last year. i think it took him about 3 months and several pairs of boots to do it. but he met lots of interesting people and had a lot of fun...
depending on when you go, i might be able to join you for part of the start...

He did the whole thing in 3 months? Really? Most of the info I've seen has said 4.5-5.5 months to do the whole thing. That's why I was resigning myself to only a part of it.

Verycool.
I had a coworker who was my age get as fed up as me at this job and he quit it all to go to California and hike the pacific crest trail. That was the first I had heard of people hiking these ginormous spans. Something he used (if I may recommend it to you) was a website called trailjournals.com, he made out a journal and when he got to towns he would mail his entries to his mom, who would enter them to that website and me and my coworkers kept up with his journey, it was SO cool. I know we here would probably all like to hear whats going on with you if you have a means to do that too. Very very cool. Good luck.

i'd have to go in a group....you know...the weirdo factor on the trail may be HIGH at times. can i bring a stun gun? and are there bathrooms out there, along the trail, like turnpike rest stop things?
maybe i should reconsider.

I might be onto something here.... If I can provide a weapon for protection and insurance of suitable restroom facilities I might be able to swing an extended hiking trip w/a bunch of riffraff wimmins!!!!!
I'm off to research some things....
