For the most part - is a person who commits suicide in their right mind at the time?

wow....deep for a morning.

one thought comes to mind. A person that is terminal and in extreme pain probably "yes" they know exactly what they are doing. But then, can't someone be in "extreme pain" mentally and still know what they are doing? I don't know.

I would say yes, they do.
because i recently lost someone to suicide, i saw this first hand.
He was very depressed, and I believe knew what he was doing. But because he was depressed he didn't realize what his actions would do those around him, therefore not thinking clearly...

Also, there is this enormous moment of clarity just before they do it. The depression seems to clear as if they are finally at peace with what is going to happen.

This is why I say yes.

I would try and not confuse someone not clearly realizing how their actions affect others with just being at the point where they don't care anymore.

true, it's not always about not caring anymore though. some people see it as an only option to get out of a certain situation. They care - they just don't think they can fix it.
But I see what you are getting at.

it's actually considered one of the "signals" to look for in a person. they'll be depressed for a long time and then be "normal", as if a great burden has been lifted. They know that the suffering will soon end and the exit from the torture is available for whenever they want it.

i don't think i can tell anyone what they were thinking at the time... not to trivialize the subject but it's almost like disecting poetry - who am i to decide what someone else really meant or thought?

all i can ever hope is that the person is happier wherever they are after they are gone (even if those around them suffer as a result..).
