Posted: 08/21/04 - 10:17 Post subject: Sugarloaf 5K - The winning race report! :p
This was the race I did :: http://sugarloaf5k.com/ It's also the very first race I ever did, way back in 2001. I think I finished with a high 24:something time.
| the race director, after I'd asked about the accuracy of the course, in an e-mail to me wrote: | | I do have to be honest and mention to you that I would not expect this course to generate a PR for most runners. It has a few hills, one of which is significant. |
OK, so it isn't flat at fast, I've got a race in October that is. All I want is to break an old PR for this distance. Today's weather is in the low 70's and the himidity is in the low 80's.
Somewhere between 300-400 runners in this race. I lined up toward the front with the 10 year old sprinters,
Gun goes off and we're gone! Front of the crowd thins out pretty quickly. By .5 mile into the race, I'm pretty confident with my positioning (7th OA).
First mile clicks off, I feel great and like I'm holding back :: 5:41 (which would be a mile PR for me too)
Holding steady, but hills are dragging me down a little. 2nd mile :: 6:07
This is the mile with the "significant hill". Ended up getting passed about half way up. 3rd mile :: 6:28 I was really hoping to be right at 18:00 at this point, but was holding on at 18:18
.1 mile finish in 00:42. Finished right at 19:00, a new PR for the 5K distance.
8th place overall and 4th in my age group. May have picked up 3rd in my AG. The 6th place guy got 2nd in my AG and the 7th place guy got 1st in his AG. Not sure how I didn't get 3rd. Official results should be posted on the website by the middle of this week.
Cliff's Notes :: 5K in 19:00 Splits were 5:41; 6:07; 6:28; 00:42 - 8th Overall out of 300-400 people.

It's a good race and a good time. You beat my 5k PR by 3 seconds.

woot!!!!! I'm seeing low 18s with a flat course in the fall and.....oh, come on-----a reasonable 1st mile . Enjoy the PR, I just don't think it's going to stay for long
