for now...I managed to move my entire aquarium, with the help of another, over to the new house this weekend. True, it was alot of work transferring the fish into buckets (it took me over 1/2 hr to net all the fish...the decor made it 10x harder Mad ), getting the gravel and plants out into several other buckets, and moving the tank to the car. Setting it up again was also alot of work.
Plus side, the fish have adjusted well so far (though the plants and decor are in a somewhat disarray), acting as though nothing has happened. I have also bought a new power filter. I ran it for a day or so together with my old, noisy undergravel filter...now with the air pump and undergravel off, the tank's virtually silent...

Let's just hope the next few weeks will go smoothly for the fish.

Nice Job Tim,
I am hoping to move up to a 30 - 55 gallon tank sometime next year. I am dreading if I ever have to move it.

STEPS for moving fishtanks across the city lines and state lines.

put a plasctic trash bag into trash cans/coolers/buckets/boxes place all non-living things in.

double bag plastic trash bags in a rigid structure. Coolers work well for this and drain the water into the cooler(s) think about how long the move is and how much oxygen might get used by fish and plants. i also like to take half the old water with me.

place plants in first. then place fish into the container(s) leave enough room to puff the bag up and leave air room as well as let closable containers close.

when getting to the new place set tank in proper location place fish close to the tank. fill tank up 1/4- 1/3 of the way and treat water. start to move decor and plants in from containers, move water in from containers and try to stabilze the water temperatures. add fish then add the rest of the transported water. top off with fresh water that is treated with stress "slime" and dechlorinator. make sure filters work and be prepared to change the floss soon. do not put in new floss right way but allow 24 hours first so as to help seed the new tank with beneficial bacteria

I moved 40% of the old aquarium water, with the rest new...the new house's not that far away from the old one but there was alot of waiting time (for the car, moving the aquarium stand and other accessories, etc) which made me a little worried for the fish...they did fine however and didn't show any signs of stress even after 2+ hrs of being in the bucket(s).

For N cycling, don't the old gravel and the plants have loads of good bacteria already?
Your tip about the new floss was the reason why I ran the two filters together for a day or so (the new power filter was supposed to run for 24 hrs before any fish can be added) just to be safe..I also added nitrifying bacteria into the water...

not needed to run for 24 before adding the fish. i tend to beleive that keeping them confined, and no filtration/aeration adds more stresses on them than the tank change does.

While the gravel really has most of the bacteria you can't count on it only. especially after adding the fresh water straight from the tap. Plants i don't count on reatitng the bacteria, not enough surface area on the roots. the filter floss has the highest concentration of of N bacteria, why kill it?
