My sister has 2 kids. They both play little league baseball. I stoppped going to the games a long time ago. They are so boring and the kids aren't at the level where they are any good.
We have lightening sensors set up on the fields. They detect lightening within the 2 mile danger zone. The sensors let off this loud whistle and let people know lightening is in the area.
The idea is to get the kids off the field and clear the area so know one gets hit. DUH!
Sure, they clear the kids off the field, but then they sit in the bleachers, mill around the consession stand, have the kids playing in the parking lot and around the bleachers. Some of the kids even play ON the field, just not a game. They wait out the 20 minutes and then resume the game.
WTF, are these people totally gone or what? I thought the idea is to get the kids to a safe spot and clear the area.

Lightning can strike from up to 50 miles away. When i hear thunder, my kid is off the field....
that's just me.
Last time, I grabbed the ump and called the game myself.
I think my exact words were.
"that's it... we're done."

I agree with you with this.
This is not something smart or safe. A former student of mine died by being struck by lightening (just shy of his 16th Bday). He was walking off of a outdoors basketball court to seek shelter from bad weather approaching.
His untimely death was one of the saddest moments in my life. He had been a volunteer for me that year and was so sweet. I was pregnant and he did all he could to make sure I wasn't lifting things. Role model student!
Lightening is something NOT TO MESS WITH!!!
Florida lightening...

I have a friend who was struck by lightning and has permanant heart problems as a result. I don't like to mess with that stuff. When I played softball and there was lightening, we got in cars and headed home.

You'd think that since they live in Florida, especially, they'd know better than to mess with the weather!

"that's it... we're done." | Good point.
A few years ago, a teenager playing ball here was struck and killed by a strike.
The storm was about thirty miles away.
The skies at the place he was hit were cloudless in all directions.

I don't mess around when lightning is possible. My cousin was struck when I was young. He survived, but he was in a vegetative state for about 15 years or so before he died.
Lightning doesn't strike twice because it doesn't have to.

That is assinine. Never mess with lightning. At my Dad's when were in the pool/hottub area, the first rumble of thunder and you get your ass in the house or garage ASAP. My uncle one time stayed in the hot tub till we had a flash of lightning once. My step Mom went over like her ass was on fire and smacked him up side the head with her open hand. He calmly got out, went to his car soaking wet and got in and left. We were all like . We laugh now and uncle is the first one out of the water too.
