The line has to be drawn somewhere. Kudos to that principal for having the spine.

Last line of the story:
"Officials at the Belpre City School District said sexually suggestive material is not allowed on school property."
Translation:
The rule on this was made by people who would not look good in said swimsuits.
Oh yeah - check the teachers' lounges in Belpre City. I'm sure there's nothing there either.

was suspension necessary?
I agree that the magazine does not belong in school, I'm just thinking another punishment may be more appropriate.

The punishment seems a bit harsh for the infraction. Alternative school?
Perhaps there's more to the kid's background?

That's ridiculous. A detention, perhaps, but a three day suspension? Give me a break. Wonder if they give the scantily-clad young women three day suspensions for dressing like hootchie mamas.

"A teacher confiscated the magazine and officials recommended time at an alternative school"
I wonder where the confiscated magazine ended up.... probably in the men's room off the teachers lounge....

I agree---that's taking it a little far, I think.

The magazine was inappropriate to bring to school, right. Punishment was inappropriate too.
One of the ways that adults (and school administrations) can teach by example is not over react. C'mon, one would think that adults should be able to see the big picture of community standards as well as understand the age level micro-environment of the kids. I don't think balance was struck between upholding standards and addressing the specific event of a 12 year old having that magazine on campus.
Then again, maybe the moral fiber in that community is ubersexuallyconservative in public. If so, their actions speak volumes.

Suspension probably wasn't the best choice... it was probably more of a reward if there is a trend to this student's behavior.
How 'bout some "volunteer" labor with the school janitors?
You've got to admit though, with getting the story published, there won't be another SI swimsuit issue in that school for quite a few years to come.

suspension?
1. confiscate magazine
2. 3 day DETENTION, makes it an obviouls infration where he would not want to try it again.
3. inform parents. let them handle any drastic measures if they are so inclined.
suspension?
and he!! was not even in the bible belt. good god people. next thing is we say that sex is a bad word and anyone using it in any fashion will be suspended too.

I bet there's more to this student's record, yes.
This kid knew what he was doing when bringing it in as well.
Usually things will get by with warning and not be as harsh in punishment if it's a first time offense.
When a student has reached the suspension/expulsion level...they have usually "earned" it.
That was just my situation when I taught the 6th grade.
Kids went through a series of things (detentions, conferences, interventions) before they ever got suspended.
NOTE: Some schools do have strict policies on drugs, alcohol, fighting, dress code, etc. There might be a clause at the school district that calls for a suspension for indecent materials brought in to school?
