crazyfrog, I didn't know you can apply for loans in grad school...I thought financial support is through the supervisor, TA/RAships, and fellowships/grants...and I'm actually planning to move to the States for grad school

ha ha ha ha ha ha got you all beat by a mile.

I'll be repaying my student loans after I start receiving Social Security, if there's any left by then.

When all is said and done, my loans will be in six-digit land.

One good 40% cut of a class-action settlement, you'll wipe it out and then some, no? Surprised

You'll be using the proceeds of your Social Security to pay off your student loans.

Good luck with that. I refuse to go into debt for school.

You are very lucky you don't have to.

Tim, thats low! I'm not even going to talk numbers, but....well just thats low. You'll get it paid quick.

Double

Mine are awful. They are getting better, however. I borrowed as little as possible, but my ex absconded with some of the money, was supposed to pay part of it per divorce agreement, and of course never did, which I did not find out about until about 6 months ago.

It sucks having to borrow money to go to college. Higher education should be free.

Why shouldn't it be free? It's unfair that rich idiots can afford to go to the best schools and intelligent middle-class people aren't able to go without going into serious debt.

Ya know, if there were not all this aid floating around out there, colleges and universities could only charge the "street price" for education. You'd see some good old fashioned price wars!

They charge more because they know you can just go out and get a loan to cover it.

And most state schools are still a bargain.

OK, beam me up to On-Topic! It's pretty comatose in there.

If you're sayin' some chump ivy league education is better than my state U diploma, I'd say, not. A flowery college diploma has yet to raise a single IQ point of any 'rich idiot'.

No. What I am saying is that higher education is not readily available to everyone and certainly not affordable. Of course an Ivy League education doesn't raise the IQ of any rich idiot. Bush is a prime exampe of that. They system is unfaily slanted to those born wealthy.

I'm moving to Europe.

In Louisiana we have TOPS which pays tuition for pretty much anyone with a 21 on the ACT and a 2.5 high school GPA. The standards are extremely lax; many people drop out after one or two semesters - they never had the intention of going to college, but since it was free they decided to go and party until they flunked out. When you make it free for all, more and more people will do this - the abuse outweighs the benefit in my opinion.

Not only that. The term "higher education" will become an oxymoron as well. Think public schools and you got a pretty good visual.
