Posted: 10/21/06 - 15:28 Post subject: Stomp the Grapes 1/2 M Race Report
Time 1:39:24, 4th in AG, 27th OA out of probably 200 or so runners.
7:08.3, 7:26.9, 7:03.6, 7:25.6, 7:33.7, 7:21.5, 7:26.7, 7:21.7, 7:34.8, 7:42.3, 8:08, 7:48.2, 9:15.2 for the final 1.1 including 3 stops just wishing I could hurl my guts up.
A gorgeous day, upper 30's at race start, probably mid 40's when it was over and plenty of sunshine. The course was very hill with no real monster hlls although the one on mile 11 wasn't very fun. Part of it was run on the towpath trail which I always enjoy running on although it's not exactly built for speed.
Felt great at the start of race and went out thinking sub 1:35 was definitely in the cards despite the hills. Felt like I was on cruise control thru 9 miles and decided at mile 10 it was time to pick up the pace. That brainfart quickly went away as I started getting an upset stomach despite eating my standard pre-race fare, not overeating, etc. I had to back down towards the end of mile 10 and the hill combined with the churning guts in mile 11 equaled out to a lovely 8:08 mile. I was just trying to hang on thru 12 hoping I didn't either crap myself or hurl all over the place. The last 1.1 I stopped three different times and assumed the position to toss into the ditch but I couldn't get anything going. So I'd start slogging along again. The freakin' portajohns at the finish line were the most welcome sight of the day by the time I got to the end. I do belive I occupied one for nearly 20 minutes - what a great way to do your cooldown.
I don't know what the hell is going on, it's 5 hrs later and I've still got an upset stomach and I haven't attempted to eat anything and only drank maybe 24 oz of water since the race ended. Maybe I poisoned myself with the toast and honey i had for breakfast. I'd rather not experience this again.
It was nice to see Kimba and one of her fellow ultra girls. The race was organized very well for a first timer too. Although I may suggest that next year they line the course with portacrappers from mile 10 to the end.

My report:
What a beautiful day for a race. This was an inaugural 1/2 marathon at theWinery at Perennial Vineyards in Navarre Ohio. It was in the 30's or 40's at the start of the race, but it warmed up rather quickly after a few miles.
My friend Nancy had emailed me Thursday, asking if I wanted to run with her on Saturday. I told her I was running a 1/2 marathon, and she quickly signed up too! In fact, she picked me up and we drove to the event together, catching up on running and personal life with each other. Nancy expected me to out run her, but I was content to run at her pace-this was my last race before Masochist; I was wearing the clothes I am planning on wearing to MMTR, with my same water bottle waist pack, and I just wanted to try everything out. Besides, running and chatting with Nancy is fun.
The race was out in the country, nice rolling hills, then we turned onto the towpath for about 4 miles-that was the best part of the run, off the roads! Nancy and I chatted up through mile 10-I turned around to admire a tree or a flower or something and damn! she took off on me!! She had already told me she was planning on picking people off at mile 10, and she did it! I set off in pursuit, but my hamstring, which had been annoying me since mile 3 or so, really starting to twinge. I didn't feel I could get much leg extension. (I've had this chronic hamstring issue for years.) So I hobbled in behind Nancy in a 2.17 or something like that.
When we went inside for food, they were out of Subway sandwiches!! Gasp! In fact, the only thing left was bananas, some doughnuts, popcorn, and chips. So Nancy and I left to get some real grub-which ended up being Subway sandwiches we paid for! Still, that will happen for an inaugural event.
So the local race scene is over for the year, and now it's time to concentrate on Masochist!!
