I call it a point of entry.

It's called a runner or a run. When a rip happens, it has a tendency to continue to rip. The rip is "running." Hence it's a runner.

We always called it a "run". But I hate stockings, only wear them if I really have to.

I loathe hose, and will be sad when the day comes that I have to wear them again. And that day will come...

I call it a run in my hose. If there is a hole (circular in nature), I call it a hole.
I wear stockings rather than pantyhose.

I used to wear pantyhose and I called them runs. They also made my feet stink hella-bad.

i love visiting the elementary school and seeing 4th and 5th graders in tights or stockings or whatever they are -- some of them are run and laddered so badly, they're only wearing one leg! it's hysterical. |
When my girls were little it was a miracle if they could make it through a day of school with out a run...

Where I come from we called them "runs". I never heard "ladders" until I started reading British novels.

Someone who shall remain nameless just laughed her fool head off at me because I said "ladder". Doesn't everyone call them ladders?? |
I've always heard them referred to as "runs".
When I lived in Italy in the 50's I vividly remember going into the local dry cleaner. In there, at a very specialized machine, was a lady who actually repaired women's stockings (hose). Don't ask me how it worked but she I did watch as she repaired a stocking. Very interesting. Remember, this was less that 10 years after WW2 and items such as silk or nylon stockinbgs were still expensive.

Nope, runners here too. I think the ladder is definitely a British term.
