I have broken down and decided I would like to read a S. King novel.
Oddly enough, I am really enjoying the character development in "Kingdom Hospital" though it is a bit slow.
What book of King's would you recommend as a "first read" for someone who has never read King?
*All of those who love Repairman Jack: I have read all but the last book. Those ROCK!

Bag of Bones.
My heart ached for the characters before it was over.

As a note to readers: "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" is a novella in the collection Different Seasons, which also includes "The Body" (the basis for Stand By Me )and "Apt Pupil".
Other than the first three Dark Tower novels, that's all the King i've read.

I haven't read a King novel in a long time, so my faves are going to be from the oldies:
Salem's Lot
Firestarter
The Shining
Christine
Four Past Midnight was pretty uneven, IMO, but I really liked The Langoliers (decent movie adaptation too).

The only King novel I have actually read was about 1/2 of The Tommyknockers and I had to quit because it was too much for my active imagination.
It's easier for me to watch the movie versions because I don't get nearly as creeped out and it's easier to forget.
I loved Pet Semetary and It. I'm sure those would be GREAT reads. Christine has always been recommended by my friends who are Stephen King fans as one of his best.

Well, if you want a nice simple story, you could go with Cujo or Carrie.
If you want a far-reaching story involving multiple characters It or The Stand are tough to beat.
I'm with Bab-Bam though....Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is probably my all-time favorite...but everyone knows the story now, after the movie.

Thank you everyone for your input!!
I haven't seen the Shawshank Redemption--and since I live under a rock, I have no clue as to the story line.
I have purchased a second hand copy of The Green Mile and Dreamcatcher.
Now, I will let you know what I think when I read them.
Mr Aire really wants me to read IT. He said it was very powerful and well written.
