Saturday night...the St. Mary Cardinals Boys Basketball Team won the school's first ever state championship! Winning a thrilling game by four points.
As most of you know, I am leaving this school at the end of the year. This is my fifth year here, and these seniors were 8th graders when I started coaching here. I have coached all of these boys over the years.
I was the assistant boys coach when they were Freshman, and The school's AD for the first 3 years of their high school career. They have come close a number of times...getting second in state 2 years ago, 3rd in state last year, and also state runners up in football last year.
They came up short so many times...I'm just proud of them.

If this was you guys, then a good friend of mine from college is one of the coaches on the team:
"I hate mass e-mails but I thought you might like this write up on our game last night from the Argus Leader.
Cardinals' Eric Mergen shatters backboard with dunk
Rane Mergen scored 28 points and Colby Fitzgerald had 19 points and eight assists as Dell Rapids St. Mary routed Colman-Egan 76-42 in boys basketball action Thursday night in Colman. The Cardinals, ranked No. 1 in Class B, remained unbeaten at 13-0 overall and 5-0 in the Dakota Valley Conference. The game took a bizarre turn with 11 seconds left in the first half, when St. Mary's Eric Mergen shattered the backboard with a dunk. The remainder of the game was played in the old gym in Colman. For Colman-Egan (6-5, 2-3), Bobby Clark scored 11 points and Adam Fritz added 10. Colman-Egan hosts Flandreau on Tuesday.
Hope you enjoyed it., oh yeah, I have the footage if anyone wants to ever see it. God Bless."

Not sure which is cooler, the team winning or the fact you guys both know the Asst Coach. Both are cool.

Just wanted to add, that it is true...one of our players shattered a backboard during the season.
Pretty rare in HS.
