Fish Day 8K and 2 Mile, Port Washington WI
Port Washington, for you non-Wisconsinners out there, is on Lake Michigan, some 20 miles or so north of Milwaukee. The races held are a part of a big on-lake festival* they hold, and the weather is always terrific.
We decided to go up without registering beforehand - LC ran the two mile race, while I decided the night before to do the 8K. In the Run of The Mill 5K, I really aggravated my tendon, which had not fully recovered when I ran that race. Since then I have going real easy on my pace - yesterday's average of 10:44.82 had been the fastest for a regular run going into this. I was looking at this with being happy with a 10:14 pace (thirty seconds faster than yesterday).
* - The headliners for the main stage were your favorite, and maybe mine, Blue Oyster Cult. Don't get much better than that.
The Fish Day runs start with a hill within the half-mile. Mercifully, they adjusted the course from last year, but there was nonetheless another hill (fortunately not so steep in such a short distance). The whole race I felt stiff and (pardon the phrase) achey, but after two miles, I was under a 9:22 pace, which was surprising. No tendon problems.
Miles three and four work back toward then Lake, an after some runs in residential areas, you are back in parks. One problem - the only one with the race (and thsi is an ongoing thing, too) - is you have to go past several cars that are in the subsequent Fish Day Parade - a fleet of Mustangs, then Corvettes, then Trans Ams, and you get the picture. Plenty of exhaust fumes for everyone. I'll take the hill of torture before going past those cars again. But once you're past those you are at the "1 More Mile To Go" marker. And here, I lnow I will finish under ten minutes.
The last 'mile' is a downhill run steeper than the hill at the start of the race. You run past some of the craft booths, the tents serving fish & chips, the entertainment area. A right turn over a block, and then three blocks in downtown - lined with people ready to watch the parade (very nice instant support section!) - to the finish.
Final time :45:54, an average of 9:13.99. Not terribly impressive, I grant you. But the tendon did not give me trouble, and that was the important thing, This was a huge test for the leg, and it went well. Finishing 322 of 398 overall, 224 of 262 for males, and 17 of 22 in AG.
LC will post her report in a little bit.

Nice job Steve, and at reasonable pace for you given your past few weeks. I'm anxious to see how the tendon responds tomorrow. Let me know.
Didja stop for fish and chips?

I did this race (the 2 mile fun run) a year ago after I'd been running for about 2 weeks - I was only at the point then where I could run just one mile without stopping, but I thought I'd give it a try, even though I knew I'd have to walk. The hill at the beginning almost did me in, but I managed to finish in 24:17 - running and walking.
This year I knew I could run the whole thing. Knowing that the hill was there was a bit scary, but because I knew about it ahead of time I was prepared. I was glad they changed the course, but was still a little intimidated by the hill.
I managed to make it all the way up the hill without walking, and made it to the first mile in 10:40 - which is my average pace (I'm still a really slow runner). After the first mile I felt pretty good - except for the heat. The last 1/2 mile or so was downhill, so I just ran as hard as I could, and finished in 20:34 - beating my last year's time by over 3 minutes.
The rest of the day was pretty fun - we watched the parade, and ate fish and chips. We didn't get any fish beads this year - but maybe next year. The day ended with the trip home during which I came down with a killer headache - caused by either sun, heat, or the loud cars and motorcycles roaring down the parade route. But after lots of aspirin and rest - I'm turning the corner.
