my first volunteer shift at the Vancouver Aquarium today...it will be mostly job shadowing with another fellow experienced volunteer for the first couple of shifts. I plan to volunteer once a week for a 3-4 hour afternoon shift.
Job Description: I'm working in a marine invertebrate teaching lab with lots of live, wet stuff (mostly from the BC coast)...Program's called Intertidal Marine Biology. High school biology classes, mostly grade 11s, come to the lab and we basically teach them something about the natural/life history of 4 groups of invertebrates (with mostly live animals, and some props and dead stuff). The kids get to touch the animals too... I think it's a great learning tool...i wished I had that field trip opportunity in high school biology.
Today's group was smaller than usual (~11 students total, split into 3 groups of 3-4, 2 of us handled 3 students) and in general unresponsive and yawning all the time...we were surprised when we were told that they came from school with strong academics...they didn't seem to reflect that today Well at least we hoped they took away something about nudibranchs, sea stars and sea anemones...
The another neat thing I found out today was that the volunteer I shadowed with is a runner and has ran 21 marathons... I will see her in next weekend's 1/2 marathon.

now ya would think that anything termed "nudibranchs" would just perk up those lil bags of hormones.
Cool Tim, i'm getting ready to head over to mine for the day and just camp out there.

Man, if I could afford not to get paid, that would be a dream job. Totally cool!
