On what issues do you "stand your ground" even though it may/may not be considered polite to do so? In other words, people need to accept that quality about you rather than you bending to do what our culture dictates.
Example: I have a relative who will not answer the phone. In fact she turns them all off. She'll listen to messages but won't return any of them even if they are from family.
Is there anything in your life like that? I tend to try to do what's polite even though it chafes me to do so sometimes.

I will not clean up a sink full of dishes left by others when they leave food on the plates and don't even bother to soak them. I've been known to pick them up and put them in a grbage bag outside (we only have one sink and if it's full of disgusting dishes I can't even get a glass of water.)

how fashionable of you, JJ!
Me, I try hard to be polite unless someone crosses the line, either with me or one of my friends. Then, all bets are off.

I won't buy my children "toy" guns. 2 summers ago I finally bought them super soakers, but they're hot pink and green (and gone, for that matter, got rid of them when we moved) and we referred to them as super soakers, not guns. I've never bought them any other type of gun-toys. I'm not against guns at all, just my children shooting one another with pretend ones. It's a quirk, but there you go. They can and do just as easily use a barbie or legos to shoot each other with (until I protest) so at least they have to use their imaginations...
Oh, and I don't care what other people let their children play with. My girlfriend has 3 boys and a hundred toy guns. That's her thing, I respect that those are her children to raise how she wants. My family however, has never been as understanding as I am. They're all hunters & gun toters, I grew up shooting guns and even playing with them, so my way of thinking is severely wrong.
