I mostly did this race because of my achilles injury. There is a good chance I will need surgury, so this might be my last chance to race for a really long time. Because of the injury, this is my first 10K and only my second race in about a year. Assuming my achilles held up in the race, I thought I had a shot at 37-38 minutes, but I would have been happy with anything under 40.
The course ended up being surprisingly tough, with lots of turns and short hills. However, the weather was perfect - cool (high 40's?), overcast, with no wind. I went out somewhat faster than I wanted and was 10th at the mile mark. I was feeling pretty good, so I tried to just sustain the pace and stay smooth. I was up to 7th at 2 miles. I pushed a little too hard the 3rd mile and got up into 6th. At this point there wasn't much of a spread between 2nd and 7th, and I felt I had a good chance to move up as people faded. I hammered hard the next two miles, but was frustrated to not make up any ground. It seems everyone had gone out conservatively. I got close, but even though I felt okay, I simply couldn't go any faster. I haven't done any training this fast, so I just didn't have another gear. I lost focus the last mile a bit the last mile and faded a bit, but I had a big margin so I had no problem holding 6th and winning my age group. This splits:
Mile 1 - 5:48
Mile 2 - 5:49
Mile 3 - 5:45
Mile 4 - 5:36
Mile 5 - 5:32
Mile 6 - 5:43
Final time - 35:10
I'm definately thrilled with my time, and even more happy that my achilles felt alright. I was a little frustrated that I couldn't make up a few more places. In spite of fading a bit at the end, I still ended up just 22 seconds out of 2nd overall and a minute behind the overall winner. Nothing that a month of good training couldn't overcome.

CoachC,
Great race! It's always nice to be pleasantly suprised by your fitness, and it sounds like you ran better than you anticipated. Splits look pretty even too. Congrats on the age group win.

Pretty consistent pacing and a great job well done despite your injury. Congrats on your 1st place finish in your age group

Coach C... smokin! I wish I had that kind of confidence when I raced. Why is it you need the surgery? Sounds like you are running strong! Way to go!!

I have a pretty serious achilles injury that had me completely off for most of 2003 with braces, a walking cast, and physical therapy for a while. With an extremely conservative return to running starting in December I was okay for a little while, but then the pain was back worse than ever. I have trouble even walking some days, and have a significant limp running and walking even on the best days. With nothing to lose, I have tried to train through it, but I'm simply unable to do any real training. I have only averaged 4-5 miles per week over the last year, although I have managed to get into the 30's a few weeks recently.
The surgery is to grind bone of the back of my heel. This is naturally occurring, not a bone spur resulting from something, so eventually I might need the surgery on both feet.
I have recently come up with something in my experimentations that might resolve this without surgery. I have a week and a half to test my theory before my doctor and I decide the next step.

CC...I'm in awe!
Congrats on this race!
Your splits look great and strong considering you have been dealing with an achilles problem.
I hope you can avoid surgery and crank out more great race reports!
Dam you're fast!!!
