Just say no to the Siberian Husky if you want calm.
"Are we going for a walk? How about now? How about now? How about I make you smell my bum? Oh, f*ck you, I'm going to run away for an hour and go visit the neighbor's retreiver."

Can't help with the Springer question, but I'm sure they're great dogs! Have you thought about getting a mixed breed of some sort? I went to the pound with a friend last week when he was adopting a puppy and there were so many cute ones. My favorite was the rottweiler/basset mixes. I'd love to see them as adults!
Good luck!

My brother and his wife have one.
Jake.
My brother calls him the stupidest dog he's ever seen.

They are not stupid! They are 'free thinkers'.
Those who are into all that sit/stay/roll over obedience crap need not apply.

Thanks for all the great replies! I can't reply to everyone.....but I'll try to remember some.
Border collies...my brother has 2 and they are definitely the smartest dogs ever. But also the most energetic. They made our Brittany look like a low key lap dog. Honestly, those dogs will NEVER stop fetching. You have to hide the toys just to get them to sit down for 5 minutes.
Shelties....a friend has one and it's sweet but barks A LOT!
RB, your pooch is so cute!!!!!! It has a tail, that's unusual! That's another thing we actually liked about Charlie and Springers, they (usually) have docked talis and you get used to not having a wagging tail knock things over!
Our major reason I think for staying away from a mix breed is you never know what you'll really get (size, etc.) and I have some friends that ended up with very different dogs than they expected!!!!
Thanks for all the great suggestions/thoughts....keep 'em coming if you have any more info!

Shelties are watchdogs! Mind you, not guard dogs. A sheltie will tell you when there's anyone around. Their hearing must be pretty sharp. Annie can be asleep one moment and standing next to me the next - even though I've tried to open that bag of chips as quietly as possible.
And when you mentioned the border collies...my sheltie will fetch a ball until I grow tired.

Yeah I thought the 3/4 length docked tail was different too. All the breeder's dogs had that. Some one told me it was the English standard. Jena was breed for Field trails, both her dad and mom are national champions. Dad is even an Canadian national champion. But she just didn't have what it takes for that. Which worked out great for me. I got a started hunting dog for puppy prices and they even paid to have her fixed.
As far as her tail goes it doesn't do any damage, not like a lab's does. Good luck on your search.
