Spider-hunting nudist ends with ring of fire
04 April 2006

SYDNEY: A red-faced Australian nudist who tried to set fire to what he thought was a deadly funnel web spider's nest ended up with badly burnt buttocks.

The 56-year-old man was at a nudist colony near Bowral, about 100km southwest of Sydney, on Sunday when he spotted what he believed to be a funnel web spider hole.

Ambulance workers, including a helicopter crew, were called to the scene after the man poured petrol down the hole and then lit a match in an attempt to kill the offending arachnid.

"The exploding petrol fumes left the man with burns to 18 per cent of his body, on the upper leg and buttocks," the NRMA Careflight helicopter rescue service said in a statement.

It said the man's lack of clothing probably contributed to the extent of his burns.

"The fate of the bunkered spider was unknown, although other guests at the resort thought it was probably a harmless trapdoor spider and not a deadly funnel web," the statement said.

NRMA Careflight said it was called to a property in the same area in January when another man kicked a spider that was crawling up the wall of a friend's cabin. The man broke his leg in two places, it said.

Scary, I knew someone who bought a sawaro cactus and it was shaking so she called the florist. They told her to get out of the house and call the fire dpt. They came over and took it out and torched it - turns out that black widows lay their eggs in sawaro cacti and they were about to hatch. UGGGGH, that gives me goosebumps just to think about!!!

In other random off topic news, this one made me laugh out loud:

Wedgies Are No Laughing Matter

When considering various methods of inflicting grievous embarrassment on unsuspecting victims, it is important to remember that the condition of having one's undergarments stuck between the buttocks, often resulting from a prankster's yank on one's drawers, is no laughing matter.

Unfortunately, it seems one Albany, N.Y., wedge-ucator failed to get the memo.

Mark Holley, a 41-year-old teacher at New Covenant Charter School, is facing misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child for giving a wedgie to a 10-year-old pupil, the Associated Press and Albany Times Union report.

Police say that Holley snuck up on the student and yanked his skivvies skyward, while in the locker room at a summer swimming program last year.

The student's mother reported the incident to the school, but the police didn't get word of it until January.

They made the arrest after interviewing both the wedgied and the wedgie-giver. (<--- best last line of a new story ever, get the Pulizter comittee!)

But definitely the best new phrase in a while...

The way the article is written kind of overshadows what actually happened, which is pretty serious. But the phrase wedg-ecator will stick in my head.
