If only community track meets were as popular as marathoning. I'd love to have been a miler for life.

Speed.
The distances will always be there to conquer. I feel that you only have a small time window to run killer times. Plus, my body type does better at running faster than it does at running longer.

Speed. Not sure when I'll get the urge to even do a full marathon (can't imagine going farther)
For all you speed demons, there's a couple of 50Ks coming up in this area soon.

That's it. A friend of mine did it in 2002 in just under 24 hours. It actually falls on my lovely brides birthday, that might be a problem...

Distance. I'm not genetically equiped for speed. (that's my story!) Like Allan, I had dreams of placing in my age group in my 70's, but a 70+ woman around here beats me now, so I don't see that being possible either.

Dude, you just ran 10.1M in 74 and change. That's damn fast in my book.

This isn't a hijack - more of a comment.
I remember back in the Kick! days when folks like megapronator, kemibe, thoner, etc all talked about how a person should start at the smaller distances and work their way up to the marathon.
The logic is that as you master the shorter distances, you learn how to train properly, avoid injury, and increase speed in small increments.
I've been employing this tactic for the last three years and I have to say that there is some sense to it. I could have a run a marathon a long time ago, but when I finally run my first one - it will be with MUCH more speed than if I skipped perfecting the 5k, 10k, 10 mile, half marathon races first. In the end, you get both distance and speed together.
And by "perfecting", I mean running a distance at the fastest speed possible for you. Not necessarily being able to beat jrjo, cjay, and runaroundsue and folks like that.
That's all I have to say about that.

I have no desire also to go longer than 26.2 and would also love to run that and lesser distances faster
