Tonight is the school's activities banquet, and I'm going to have to get up and talk both for the girls basketball team, and for the CC teams.

Now, 4 years ago we had a teacher and coach leave, who had been here for like 4 years, and he got a standing ovation at this banquet.

I'm a little worried about what to say if something like that happens. Not saying it will. My situation is a little different....everyone has known I'll be leaving for quite a while now, whereas he decided like that week.

Who knows...maybe I'm just worried about nothing. But I'm thinking that could be overwhelming, and I'll end up crying like a baby. I don't want to do that.

So? What if you do? They'll see you're human and that you care. The world could use a little more of that. Very Happy

You should have realized something like this could happen once you submitted your resignation. You leave having done a lot of good for the school, not to mention your students and teams. It's not like you're leaving under a cloud of trouble or controversy. The parents attending understand what you're doing (or so I would hope), and if the kids don't right now, they will.

Just tell 'em what's in your heart. If there's tears, so be it. Nothing to worry about, and nothing you should be ashamed of.

What they said. And maybe he got a standing ovation because he announced during his speech that he was leaving. ( ? )

Lots of humor Coach. Get a handful of fubby stories tucked in your head to rattle off if they want a speech. It'll help you relax and keep the audiences attention plus make it memorable.
You'll do fine... just avoid too much buttslappin' Wink

No, I was there when it happened, when he got introduced, everyone stood up. Of course, the guy introducing him was his assistant coach, and he got weepy during the introduction....

The more I think about it...I don't think it's gonna happen. Our situations are just much different.

In fact, I actually feel kinda stupid posting this thread. It almost sounds pompous, "What should I say if I get a standing ovation?".

Get over yourself, Mark.

This is an excellent idea! How 'bout some of your Riff Raff bits? That'll have 'em glued in their seats! Shocked

talk about the future, about what it takes to try out, practice and stick with a team through the season, through good and bad. How that is a lot like life. Stick through the bad times and you come out a winner.

That is what I would say.

just be prepared either way, emotionally. it could be very "lump in your throat" so being ready is a good thing--it's not pompous. Neutral

good luck

I heard it more "What should I do if I get emotional." Giving two hoots isn't pompous in my book. Very Happy

I'd get about three seconds into a speech like that and be bawling....just speak from the heart, and if you get emotional, then so be it. Showing you're a human being is never a bad thing.

Of course, WE'LL all make merciless fun of you for it, but what are friends for? Wink Twisted Evil

No, really.....seriously....just go with the flow. I think it'll be a great night.
