(thanks for speaking of them andydp!)
I just saw on the news that fresh crab meat may be hard to come by this year. The crabbing industry in the Baltimore area is really taking a hard hit this year due to not being able to farm out the work to Hispanics with B-4 (?) Visa's. Apparently they hire labor every year through some program that has "closed it's doors early" this year and the crabbing industry has lost a few thousand workers.
There is a job fair in the area today so hopefully they will get some employees or this is going to be a very expensive crab eating year!

My father in law has a crabbing license for the Delaware River. We get all the free crab meat we can handle.
Right now there's about 5 lbs of crabmeat in my freezer.

Eating them once was enough for me.

A fubby crab story:
I remember going crabbing with my wife and in-laws. The wimmins were wearing sandals. Made for quite a scene when one of the crabs got loose in the boat.

I had crab and lobster last night for dinner and it was finger-lickin good...
We have plenty of crabs down here on our coast...Before time constraints came in, my Dad and I used to head out to the inlets on our Zodiac, toss our crab traps into 50-90 feet of water, leave it there for a few hours, and later haul up a nice catch of crustaceans. The dep. of Fisheries and Oceans in our area has imposed a size limit (carapace width) for recreational fisheries (don't know about commercial fishing). You need a licence to crab or sportfish in BC. Also males are the only ones to be kept (the females of the species that lives on our coast grows small-under legal size). So in a typical catch, we usually get anywhere from 3-6 legal sized ones (usually 1-2 lbs with an occasional 3 pounder) out of 20-25 in one trap...good enough for a nice dinner! That way we will always have a sustainable crab population in our waters..with the exception of poaching, I think it's quite a good deal.

Eating crabs is more about socializing than eating anyway. One piece of crab meat, 3 oz beer, another piece of crab meat, 3 more oz of beer. I mean, heck, it takes you so long to get the one piece of crab meat out that you have to reward yourself with the beer. Then, by the time you have finished a couple of crabs off you are half toasted and the crab meat won't taste so bad (for you).

 | I didn't say it was bad. It was like lobster - they both taste like chicken to me. I'd rather have steak or chili.
But of course with a beer... wait. 6 ounces of beer puts you away? My child, you would never survive overnight in Wisconsin.

They taste like chicken to you?! Maybe you're like me, and have never had the real thing.
