...or, A Weekend In Nashville, complete with dinners, fashion critiques, and a celebrity encounter.

This was really not our first time in Nashville. On a trip to DC (the capital, not Diva), we stopped overnight on the outskirts, just to get a room, and then head home. This time, though, counted.

Everything you know or think you know about Nashville is true, and then some. The good, the bad, the bizarre. We arrive Thursday night (after chatting on the road with a couple of Riff Raffers), and go to a restaurant. LC makes the mistake of ordering tea, which being in the South is fixed a little differently than elsewhere. Which she remembered once she began to drink it. We were able to drive a little downtown to get the feel of the place.

On Friday we go to the Nashville Conventin Center for packet pick-up. I get in line, call up Jacked, and had this discussion with one of the women organizing the lines:

She - YEW MUST HI-AVE YER REGISTRATION AND A PHO-TO ID.
Me - Don't need one - my face is my ID.
She - Huh?
Me (I've got her on the line, so I'll play with her a bit) - You don't know me?
She - No.
Guy in line behind me - Everyone knows him. I'm with him.
Me - That's right - everyone needs a posse.
She (totally confused) - Yew've got your card?
Me - Yup.
She - Yew've got a pho-to ID?
Me - My face is my ID.
Guy - I'll have what's he's having.

Once we get the stuff, we go up and down Broadway, the main drag for tourists in d/t Nashville. A nice mix of the old (the Ernest Tubb Record Store - actually pretty cool - the Ryman Theater, original home of the Grand Ole Opry) and the new (the obligatory Hard Rock, the new entertainment venue there, the Gaylord Entertainment Center) in a downpour.

LC in downtown Nashville.

Got to the hotel (literally across the street from the race start) just in time to be picked up by Poky and Li'l Poky for dinner. We were joined there by Poky's parents (very nice), and her sister (Smoky Poky), who's running too. To say LC and Li'l Poky hit it off could be the understatement of the year, but she can give you the details.

Race info at the appropriate place.

After the race, showers, etc., Poky calls from her hotel (I know, she lives there, but she and sis wisely decided to stay in a hotel for the weekend), which is a ten minute walk from ours. We go there and get in the lobby. When I call Poky to say we arrived, she tells us they're across the street waiting for us, and her husband (Poky Mon) is coming to get us. As he comes in he says, "Let's go - there's someone out here you may like to see."

We step out and there's a woman talking to a group of older women, posing for pictures, signing autographs. I don't register the face, though it looks familiar. But LC knows. "OMG! Steve, do you know who that is?!" "Uh... I'm not sure." "That's Wynonna! That's Wynonna Judd!" Face and name then associate.

Why is this man smiling?

LC takes a picture while she's with the women. When they leaves she looks at us, comes up to me and says "Hi, there! Why don't you all come over and we'll take a group picture." So while Poky Mon works the camera we pose. And I feel a hand. On. My. Butt. Not doing anything bad, mind you - must be a Southern custom. And no, my wallet was still there when I was done. Of course I was too polite (read: happy)to point the situation out to Ms. Judd. Though I do have to wonder why we held the pose for five minutes and only one picture was taken. She was really very charming and nice, all the best you'd expect from a celebrity, taking her time to make us feel comfortable.

Poky and Smoky Poky meanwhile wonder why it takes so long for us to cross the street with them. We walk over to a nice little restaurant with a nice southern fare. The food almost made me want to not come home and start living down there. We spent a good four, five hours there, eating, having a few beers (thank you, Smoky), calling up Pffff, and having a window table, checking out the couples on PROM NIGHT. Mothers of Tennessee, you let your daughters leave the house like that? Thank you! A walk over to Maggie Moo's for ice cream, where we must have been the trend-setters, as the place was packed by the time we left.

We left yesterday in a fog (literally) - the one nice day weather-wise, and we have to go. Thank you so very much to Poky and all the Poky fam for getting us such a good hotel, and showing us such a great time. This is easily one to remember! Mr. Green

(other pictures as we can figure them out - a few - very few - at http://retrieverworld.blogspot.com/ others in our photo file, which we'll try to e-mail some of you).

To the photo-challenged: The ones here, or the ones at the link too?

I'll work around it, whichever way.

To the un-phoned: I didn't have numbers. I think we put at least three hours on the cell phone this weekend. My bad.
