Posted: 08/20/02 - 09:43 Post subject: Sore Foot
Ok, here's the deal. About 6 weeks ago, I went and bought new shoes. I was wereing the Asic's GT-2070. (I loved the GT-2050's and 60's, didn't like the 70's) I went to my not so local running store. The kid there talked my into going to a light cushion (the 2070's are a stability shoe). I have been running with the Saucony Grid Trigon for about six weeks. After 4 weeks my left foot started to cramp up on the laterial side(outside). This only happened on long runs (over 4 miles). I would take a few days off and the pain would go away. Then on Saturday I ran 5 and the pain came back about the 4th mile. I'm thinking it is the shoes... I went and bought a pair of Saucony Grid hurricane 5's. On Sunday hoping this will help.
The pain is on the bottom outside edge between the heel and the ball of the foot. My whole foot and ankle feel pretty tight today. Any ideas????

Don't have the same thing myself. The bottoms of my feet get sore from an old case of plantar fasciitis. If I push too much mileage on, it's almost a given, the old aches start rising to the surface again. The last couple weeks as I ramp things up somewhat, I've been combatting the bottom of the foot aches by rolling a golf ball under my foot as I sit at my desk or at home, with a shoe off of course. I tried this a long time ago when the pf was really bad and it hurt like crazy, but now to just combat some minor tightness, it seems to work wonders. Can't say what it'll do for you, but worth a shot. Are you staying off the cement and minimizing the miles on asphalt? Dirt and grass are what I find best for my tootsies. I'm notorious at running across people's yards right alongside the sidewalk. No one's ever said anything, except for the occasional yapper dog

Sounds like it was the shoes. Let me know how you like the Hurricanes, I just switched to them from NB763 and I love them!
I too am a longtime PF sufferer and I know I absolutely CANNOT wear cushioned shoes with no stability or my arches feel like they are being ripped in shreds. If the shoe fits, as they say......don't fix what ain't broken. The Saucony's should do the trick if that is it, they are really good stability shoes with just a little more cushion than the normal ones.
Cushioned shoes are primarily for oversupinators, people whose feet turn outward, as opposed to a lot of us pronators, who need the correction from collapsing inward. The pain on the lateral side of your foot could be from the overcorrection of the cushioning, since that's where it is concentrated. Your feet don't NEED to be being pushed inward, but they probably are.
But if the shoes don't fix it, time to see the doc, OK??

Well, My foot is still sore, but not near as bad as before. I am a huge supinator but the cushion shoes are making the situation worse. I went and saw the foot Dr. and he said to get into some orthodics. Hopefully that will happen soon. The soreness comes from one of my metatarsels dropping out of place and needs to be popped back in. The cushion shoes flex too much and allow that to happen. I bought some OTC (over the counter) insole to help tide me over and so far they are helping. Anyway I am running again and that in itself has made a huge improvement on my disposition.
