Posted: 07/03/03 - 13:55 Post subject: Sometimes, I'm too slow
I got caught in a time warp. I was working diligently at crafting a thoughtful response ( ) and the thread got locked. But I have something to say, so here goes:
Oh, and please, please, please, read the term "you" in general terms. I'm not speaking to anyone in particular, but to everyone in general.
| genie wrote: | | Gogirlgo wrote: | But I don't think Bret, or anyone for that matter, meant for it to turn into anything like this. That's the whole thing, that sometimes stuff just turns big. I sent out an article on Wal-mart b/c we'd had a discussion on it a while back and it got a five page response. I didn't send it to create a huge thing.
If we're saying that we want to keep it all light and fluffy, we'll never be able to discuss anything other than pizza icons. And personally, that would bore me spitless. |
Well, then we're likely even because going roundandroundandroundandround and hashing and rehashing gives me a damn headache! To each his/her own. I don't come here to have to delve into the deepest, darkest recesses of other people's minds. That's what school is for. What's the answer then? |
The answer is CHOICE. You choose to log in here, you choose which threads you read, you choose which threads to which you respond, and you choose your words. You choose your tone, you choose to debate, you choose to ignore, you choose to delve. If you choose to be here, then you choose to be part of a community which you do not control.
Like Joel said, this forum molds itself. It is representative of many people with a wide variety of opinions. If you want to "chat" with people who only share your opinion and views, feel free to start your own forum and block and lock at will. You can't do that here unless you're PH.
There are many issues worth discussing and many opinions worth sharing. I've enjoyed discussions, for the most part, because I'm exposed to other people's opinions and thoughts and it's those opinions and thoughts that get me to THINK. Who am I and what am I if I refuse to think, consider, reason and debate, even with myself? There are people here who discuss things rationally and make an attempt to back up their opinions with experience, facts and sources of information. In my many years, I've discovered that truth is elusive. While I doubt that I will find it here, there have been many nuggets of truth and wisdom, as well as fun, frivolity, motivation and yuks. I keep coming back here for all of this forum's attributes.

That is, hands down, the most intelligent post I've read here in a long, long time. The rest of it as well, but that small bit the most.

I'd meet you at a bike rack, but it seems you've already got your afternoon full, you dirty propaganda-sputtering fascist!

But honestly, I am as political as they come. I find that I will put my two cents in on occasion, but I try to stay out when it gets too heavy. Life is too short. I like the people here, and political views are no reflection on whether someone is a good person or not. Why get all worked up over disagreements over nothing? We are not going to change each others minds, so really we get to a point it is all about hearing ourselves (or seeing ourselves) Again, life is too short.
It took my years to get to this point, and I find that my life is much less stressful and my friendships are much more fullfilling.

But like OL said, you can choose to participate in the thread, or choose not to. If it is truly the consensus of everyone here that all threads should be light hearted and fun and anything remotely controversial should be avoided, that so be it. I can live with that. But I can't help wonder if a few people have tried to make that decision for everyone else.
