Posted: 05/02/03 - 14:20 Post subject: Somebody with manners help me out!
Hubby and I just had a colorful conversation. We've lived in our house for 3+ years now and everytime somebody new comes over he gives them a grand tour, this includes all the bedrooms, master bath, basement everything. We live in a very standard ranch home and the layout is pretty basic, nothing special- I've always found it odd he does this. ( Not to mention just about every loser that works here had seen my bedroom.
I think that's a little creepy.)
So after all this time of not saying anything I finally asked why he does this. I was just curious. He says its just good manners. You should always do this. I apparently have no manners. He wants me to prove him wrong so I will be searching manners on the net the rest of the day. Anybody that fancys themselves good hosts please advise.

I don't know jacksnot about manners so I will refrain from offering my crappy advice on this monumental issue. I've given new friends a tour but not just some yoyo who shows up for a party or whatever.

I've always felt awkward going on "a tour". Unless it's close family that is really interested in the house, I've got to agree with you.

I really don't know much about manners....so I'm not sure why I'm posting except to say I'm with you, I think its odd to show your house 3 years after you've lived there. Two weeks after you move in? Sure, I'd expect it, but now? I don't know why someone would want to see it....and I'm with you also on the creepy/bedroom thing. I for whatever reason don't like for just anyone to see my bedroom. I don't know why, its just a bed and a dresser, but its private somehow...okay, proceed with your discussion about congeniality now...

You're sharing one of the most intimate things about you...Acquaintances probably shouldn't be allowed to see it (unless your house is in Graceland).
I'm somewhat of a 'manner-ful' human bean (except when I'm not) so I'll go ahead and say that your hubby is 'wacko like Jacko'.

Never show the bedroom! You just never know when a stray pair of underwear is going to be stuck to a wall and this could be a potentially embarassing situation....
Akern: Here's the master bedroom.
Friend: Gross! Somebodys bvd's are stuck on the wall!
Akern: Crash! As she hits the floor dying of embarassment....

First of all I show no one the bedroom. And secondly hubby actually straightens it out in anticipation of showing it.

How does this happen? (looks once again at Rob's avatar...)
On second thought, I don't want to know.
I do know that part of the reason I don't like to show my bedroom is because my cat likes to carry my laundry around so I may have any assorted garment strewn about like a sharon stone movie. And its easier for him to carry the, uh, smaller things ie, it ain't my jeans that will be out...

I could see "the grand tour" if you had a majorly cool house - like if you restored it or had something really unique built. Other than that, unless the guest/s have to spend the night, I probably wouldn't give them a tour. Unless they asked, of course. Depending on how creepy they were, I'd either oblige or give them a tour out the front door.

My best friend has been to my home more times than I can remember. He's never seen my bedroom, but he's seen the rest of the house.
To me, there are some parts of the home that are public, and some are private. My rule is to show them the parts of the house that I wouldn't mind them seeing if they were alone and snooping around.

We usually don't get the entire house presentable for company, so they see the rooms we want them to see, everything else is off limits. Last family that visited us did not get a grand tour.

i find it odd this urge to tour the home with acquaintances.. he's proud of his nest?? has he done lots of home improvements he wants to show off??
i personally despise when anyone goes nebbing through our house on a tour. don't you work with your hubbie so therefore your mutual cow-workers are lurking in your bedroom.....whatever are they thinking when they breeze into that personal space???
odd.
