I'd rather have a shot in the arm. They give you a topical pain killer before they stick the needle in. You can barely feel anything.

Skip the novacaine...earn a dude card. Really though, if it's only a tiny spot of a cavity, it'll hurt a whole lot less than the homestretch sprint in a 5km. Savor the pain

I've never had a cavity either! Wow, we've got some great teeth here.
Shelfie, don't worry. They'll swab a topical anesthetic over your gums before they put the needle in.
And the needle doesn't go into your gums, by the way - it goes into the soft part where your face is attached to your mouth.
You will be fine. The worst part will be when you want to eat or drink something three hours later and you are still dribbling.

joel - joel - joel
i trust by now you have been initiated into the world of needledom and drilldom. i have had more novacaine shot into my mouth -- get this -- one time (at dental camp) i had nine shots for a root canal. nine shots.
i am da queen. never felt a thing.
the fillings i had drilled as a child, before novacaine, were horrendous. there is nothing to compare to the pain when he hits a nerve and YOU ARE NOT NUMB.
here's hoping you got your shot on........it truly is the only way.
da novacaine queen.
p.s.
and, i am silently praying, that you never ever ever enter the land of root canaldom.
with dental work, i find the anticipation always out-does the realization.
poor wittle joel.

What ever you do, don't think it's fubby that you can bite your lip afterwards and not feel it. You'll have to tilt your head sideways so when you drink, it doesn't leak out of your cheek.
