One of my handicapped students came into class with her aide. They stayed, count 'em, 3 minutes!!!!!!
it's the end of the day. this class is almost always late, and this girl misses a lot of school, in addition to arriving late to my class. so she came in 10 minutes late, stayed 3 minutes, then left. She has to ride a van home and would have left my class 10 minutes early anyway. but that still leaves 15 minutes that she should have been here. How are we doing this student any good, if she isn't in the classroom like all the other students?

Let me be clear about my complaint. I am not complaining that she is here. Students with special needs who can benefit from being in the classroom, should be with their peers. I am complaining that if this child has to spend that much time away from the general population, this may not be the best placement for her. as a parent, I know I'd want the best possible benefits to my kid, especially if there was some handicap. Is this the best we can do for this little girl?

Good points. There must be something else for her.

she might have had an issue that needed to be addressed thus left. I know Abby gets pulled from classes all of the time because of different therapies and the like. There are also times when her nurse Carole has to administer some type of medication or assess a possible medical problem.

I agree 3 minutes is not long, but there might have been something else brewing that needed to be addressed.

yes, that's possible. I would think that the aide would have been aware of that before she came in my room though. 3 minutes???

question. Was it a disruption to the rest of the class?

I know, it seems short, don't know all the circumstances, sometimes I know that Carole takes Abby into a class and sees that she is not "having it" for the day and just removes her from the class as to not have a scene later on. Hard to say really.

and let me say that this girl does not have the medical issues that Abby has. No one is administering medication to her on a regular basis. there are some personal care issues that could cause her to be taken out of class, and maybe that was it. I'm just saying that if it was a personal care issue, maybe the time to check for those things is before you make a big production of getting her into my room (and yes, the aide, not the girl herself, makes a big production of it) As far as not "having it" for a class, that isn't an issue for this girl.

Yes. and it is nearly always a disruption when she comes. If she's late, that disrupts the lesson. If she's early, the aide has a habit of placing the girl in a poor spot, and she becomes an obstacle that the class has to maneuver around.

okay, then I fault the aide more than anyone. Some people just relish that attention. Unfortunately the girl is probably used to the attention and thinks nothing of it.

I have a student who is seriously obese. He is also special ed. The gym where class is held is not in the building, it's next door...so the kids have to walk about a half block to get there. He arrives 5-10 minutes later than everyone else....he just can't keep up. So, I got an e-mail from his Special Ed teacher to have him leave PE early, because it takes him too long to get back to the Special Ed room. So the kid who need PE worse than everyone, gets half as much PE time as everyone else.
