Posted: 02/10/06 - 16:23 Post subject: So on my first day as acting director of security...
at the college where I teach part time I was asked by the director of public safety to fill in for two weeks while he is away. It was okayed by all the powers that be there because of all my experience. All I am to do is just over see the men and women and sign off on the paperwork everyday. Not a big deal.
I walk in today to make my contacts with people on campus and to check in and just as I am about to review paper, only being on campus for 5 minutes, the fire alarm activates in one of the dorms in the area where the day care is located.
While en route I find out there is smoke in the kitchen area due to burnt cookies. Upon arriving with the officer on duty, I assign him to check the floors for stragglers and assist getting people out of the building while I check out the smoke condition.
I removed the cookies from the oven, got the place ventilated by maintenance with fans and had maintenance reset the alarm. Every child and student was accounted for.
Since I am only checking in for a few hours a day, Hannah came with me. Needless to say she was quite overwhelmed by the sense of urgency by everyone. She even agree to go with one of the students whom I know until I got everything under control.
My next 1.5 hours were then uneventful. I am hoping that my next 13 days are better than my first five minutes.

the cookies were thrown out much to the surprise of the director of the day care. When she asked me who threw them outside, I replied I did, it was the source of the problem and they were hard as rocks. She said but they were not burned. I walked away.

Oh man. That is classic elementary school teacher thinking there.
Keltic will appreciate this.

Tomorrow you need to put the daycare on lockdown and do a weapons search, just for kicks.
That'll show her.
