So my wife watched a show on the Military Channel last night

and really liked it.

It was "Ace in the Hole" The capture of Sadaam Hussien. She really like the show and knew that one of my best friends was in Iraq at the time of his capture and was posted at the prison where SH was held.

Now if I can just get her to discuss the aspects of the Pelopennisian War, Hoplite warfare and tactics, and George Patton, she would understand me a little bit more.

The SR-71 being mothballed despite it's amazing capabilities.

Or, how much capacity C-5s carry vs. C-130s.

But, on the 130s vs the C5s--which will fit into the terrain you're trying to land on--that's what makes all the difference.

And the SR-71s were retired because its capabilities were no longer required. Supposedly something new came on the scene. But, alas, you're correct. We'll never know exactly what capabilities t had. There's a handful of people who know, but most of that info is still classified.

Sure, the C-130's don't need as much runway for TO/L...but the load capacity of the C-5's is so much greater than that of the smaller aircraft. It depends on what needs to be moved, pure and simple. Some things just cannot be moved via the C-130, regardless of length of runway. If it won't fit inside the Hercules, you can have the longest runway on the planet and it'll do you no good. I had information regarding just such an event. It was classified at the time but I'm still hesitant to speak of it, even though it may have been declassed years ago. Something needed to be transported and the Galaxy was the only aircraft which could do the job.

Oh, how I am so aware of this very thing....modern technology has replaced the need for more than the Blackbird. Even though it may seem to be a minor problem, personnel retention was difficult. The training of the groundcrews took a long time. Keeping them in the Air Force wasn't the easiest thing, either.

Bingo on the 130/C5 issue.

There's a lot that I hear around that I don't discuss because I never know how it will be used or interpreted. (Even stuff that's in the base paper--silly as it is, someone might use that info plus another piece to do harm). That being said, let's go to the E/O club and talk about it!!!

There's a few guys in Mr Aire's squadron that talk to me like I'm not some empty headed bimbo. They discuss (non-classified) plans, maneuvers, etc with me. I LOVE IT!! The others just treat me like a "Ma'am" and ignore me completely. Sad

Well, if it's published in the base paper, it's there for any and everyone to see. No harm, no foul. But I understand. It's just that the stuff I got to read (on a daily basis) made reading newspapers so very, very dull. But, yes! Let's hit the club. Buy me a beer and I'll tell you anything!
