I'm putting off any sort of housework, and was pondering something that hasn't even happened, but just curious as to what people think.
Do you look out for yourself first, or show loyalty to those who have helped you, as in a job situation? If someone couldn't pay you what you were worth, but had been nice to you, and flexible, but someone else could pay you more and be nearly (but not quite)as cool, what would you do? Especially if you had become friends with all of your co-workers/business owners.
Just curious as to how others view these type of things. If I sound conceptually naive, keep in mind that this is the first time I've worked in small town, for a small business, or much less lived in a small town.

Loyality all the way for me. It speaks louder than money to me. I'm from a small town too and own my own small business. If you find someone that is good to you, flexible etc. you better go with it.

I worked for my best friend for 4 years. I quit a better job to go back to work for him. He needed me and he was good for and to me. Made all the difference in the world. I couldn't wait to go to work everyday.

Loyalty is probably the one trait I think that keeps small town America alive. There's many ways to think of it.. buying local, being neighborly, political process, etc. But as you mention, one of the biggies is clenching your teeth on your wallet and realizing that quantity doesn't always equal quality when you start to talk about salaries and lifestyle.

i think it depends on how financially stretched you are; if money and bills is an ongoing stresser in my life, getting a bigger paycheck would be almost necessary to make ends meet, then i'm sorry, i'd go for the money.
if you're fine where you're at, comfortable, making it ok and not doing without, then i'd stay amongst friends and feel lucky to have them.
yeah, i'm two faced.

I don't think that is two faced. The first responsibility has to be what is best for you and your family, and if you can afford to work a lower paying job that will make you happier (and help a friend)and maintain a comfortable standard of living, then i would do that. If not, and those bills and financial stability loom large at the end of the month...then i would think the money is the way to go. Right now, for my family (fiance and I), we can't afford for me to take a lower paying job. When we can wipe out some debt, then money won't be an issue. But when before my paycheck hit my account on friday, i had $2.18 in my checking.

Its one trait that I admire most about people. I am very loyal to my friends, and family.

Typically, I'd go with the loyalty reasoning. However, if I had to make ends meet I'd go for the job worth more money. It sounds selfish, but I'll put food on the table and clothing on my children's backs first. That takes a lot of money, that I know. I'd go with the job where I made more.
I'd be honest with my friend/s who I worked for and tell them my situation. Then, I'd set out to do what it takes to support myself and my family.
