Say what you will but I think Oprah tries to really have a purpose for her shows and expose what she will so people will seek help/see warning signs/etc. She's the only one I've seen that seems to feel any sense of responsibility for her role however. When Dr. Phil first started out on Oprah he did some pretty good things, and it was funny, the wacky Texan doctor tamed by the confines of the Oprah show. His anecdotes in doses with Oprah sort of levelling him with weird looks and commercial breaks. Then the first season of his show came and there was no Oprah. And he could just rattle on about socks on a rooster and such and had stay at home mom vs. working mom debates in between fat families and moms who just can't bring themselves to clean the bathroom. And he....lost me. |
I used to watch him a lot and now don't much at all. Before long he'll be just like Springer!
I watched the first few minutes last night and just couldn't. The mom that started drinking at noon and then all day long and it was just all too much. I can't even imagine.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. I watched up until she went to Belize for rehab. They gave a preview of what happened, and she was in jail when Phil and her husband went to pick her up from the airport. At that point, I just couldn't watch anymore.
At the very least, and sadly, the children should be removed from the home, before someone ends up dead in a car crash, or something happens to the boy who is sick. They have to resuscitate him every time they turn around, and I worry that they're going to be too hammered to help him at some point.

The good doctor is an opportunist like no one else. | Wasn't he (Jerry, not Phil) thinking of running for gov or Senator a couple years ago? Couldn't've done (much) worse than some of the illustrious ones of recent memory (on both sides of the aisle - plenty to go around). | Jerry was going to run for Governor, he also thought about Senator. He stood down on fountain square at lunch for several days trying to talk to people... Most people just walked past him. His pollsters told him not to run and that he needs to change his image if he ever wants to get back into public office.
So, now he does a political radio show here in town and commutes to Chicago. He has not given up his other job to change the image... the $$ is too good.
He's an embarassment to my City.

Dr. Phil is the king of the one-liners and man attackers. He does more harm than good and did on Oprah also.
He sees these people for about 20 minutes before the show, talks to them during the show and suddenly he knows enough about their life to solve their problems. A decent therapist would not render advise so quickly.
I hate to think of the number of marraiges he has helped to end based on advise given to the poor women that have come across his path on those shows. Every time I hear "but Dr. Phil says..." I just want to shake the woman to get sense back into her. Dr. Phil is nothing more than a money-grubbing leach upon the emotions of distressed women. He uses them for what he can get and them sends them off the fend for themselves.
He's a snake in the grass.

And on that note, if a person is in need of help, why to they seek it from a talk show? Not only are they not getting "helped", now a brazillian people know you're an assclown.
