Posted: 02/06/03 - 14:36 Post subject: So I called the principal at my son's school this morning
on tuesday the principal hauled my son into the office for the 2nd time this year. The princ. doesn't care for the characters that my son eats lunch with. so here's how it played out: his table is goofing off at lunch, my son tries to get his friends to settle because he sees the princ coming over. the guys get into some mild trouble, but my son hasn't done anything and isn't blamed. next period, my son goes to the restroom, one of the other guys is there and reads the graffiti on the wall to my son, just as the princ walks in to monitor the RR. said princ is the target of the graffiti . Later my son is pulled out of class (in front of the students) princ grabs his planner and takes him to the office. He is grilled about who wrote the graffiti, grilled about why he chooses to be friends with those slackers, planner is scrutinized, etc. asks him if he knows about "guilt by association" and did those 2 plan to meet in the restroom after lunch, but my son still isn't "blamed" for anything. Princ makes remark that this is the 2nd time my son has been in there, "The 3rd time, it's over."
Son is upset. He's an A student and both of my older kids have always been open to friendships with all students regardless of social status (makes me proud). He tells mrs. keltic, and she tells me. I do some more questioning (and it did get a little wierder) and I decide that I have to call. I spent at least 20 minutes on the phone with this guy, and I'm not sure that I'm at all satisfied with the outcomes, although he assures me that Sterling was not in trouble. I explained that Sterling certainly felt accused and that from what he told us, it sounded that way to us too, al that questioning, guilt by association stuff. Princ goes on to tell me how experienced he is with kids and how he spends time with students to get to know them, so that he doesn't just see them when they're in trouble. SO I ASK: Have you done that with Sterling? He hedged. I cut him off and asked again "HAVE YOU DONE THAT WITH STERLING?" Now he admits that he hasn't and asks my permission to speak with him again and get off on the right foot.
I'm not sure that I really want him near my kid, but an attempt to get to know how my son thinks is a good step.....

Obnoxious question: would you consider pulling your son aside to ask him (with equal zeal) whether he really thinks it's worth it to run with these fellows?

Principal sounds like a real dillweed. Unfortunately, he is the principal of the school, so it is probably in your sons best interest to get into his good graces.
I would monitor the situation closely, though.

I always start out on the side of the authority in question Grill my son endlessly, then act. We've known these kids for a long time, he's been in school with them from the beginning.
I asked Sterling before I made the call "am I going to be embarrassed if I make this call? is he going to tell me that you were doing something that you haven't told me about?"
Obnoxious? Yes it is. but remember, I'm a teacher too, and I won't go after another educator unless I feel that there really is a problem. My son sees these guys at lunchtime and on the bus. That's it. I'm not worried about it.

i don't think he knew it when i called. but I called from school and while I was on the phone with him there were several announcements made that I'm sure he could hear over the phone. i think he caught on.
UPDATE: Principal must have gone to make up with my son immediately because my son said it was 2nd period when they talked. so what's that, within 10 mins of my call? son was ok with it, wife kept asking me what I said to him.....We had a good laugh about some of the guy's concerns. But we are still planning on keeping an eye on the situation. The "wierd" stuff still has a creeped out a little. This principal acts like he wants to be friends with the students.....he couldn't stand that there was graffiti about him. Seems like the fact that it was about him was more important than the fact there was graffiti. He also offered an apology to one of the other students and said that he'd take them out to McDonald's som evening 2 words crossed my mind and hooked up with each other: Paranoid Pedophile. I hope I'm wrong, but one never knows!
