Smoking could be banned in every cafe, restaurant and most pubs in England by 2008 under plans unveiled by the government on Tuesday.

Do you think that a govt. entity (here in the US) should be able to regulate this type of conduct on private property? What are your thoughts? I'm certainly not a smoker, but I've got mixed emotions about this.

I see your angle on the government restricting what private citizens do and how such a precedent could be scary, however, the price of smoking specifically on tax payers and insurance companies, not to mention our health, and pollution, is one that we all pay. I could support it, yes.

Local governments already are. I know there is a difference between cities banning smoking and the federal government banning smoking, but it is happening on a smaller scale here in the US.

One area of impact are the tobacco farmers, who are already struggling. I don't know what should/would be done about them.

I don't think it should be banned from restaurants and other private businesses. If you want a smoke free atmosphere, go somewhere else. I would be all for a ban on smoking in public places, including parks and sidewalks.

in Rehoboth Beach last weekend there was no smoking in restaurants or bars. THAT was so nice to come back from the bar and not smell like cigarette smoke.

I can't imagine going to a pool hall and not coming back smelling like smoke and liquor. I think it would lose a lot of the atmosphere.

You won't find anyone more anti-light em up than me...however, imo the market-place and states-local govt's should decide this...

if enough people refuse to go into smoke-filled places than, restrauants, bars, etc will start to ban smoking in their establishments...

but cheryl, makes a good point...about the cost of smoking...and i believe Great Britain has socialized medecine, so i can certainly understand why they would want to do this as a cost savings measure...

I'm already well aware that some local US governments/states are banning public smoking. Whether or not that is the case in your backyard, the question remains is it legal and/or an approriate use of government to govern such conduct at private business.

P.S. The cost of insurance (rising to cover smoking related illnesses) is secondary to the issue I'm trying to address. I don't want Big Brother watching anymore then you do, but let those who choose to smoke pay more for their insurance premiums.
