Posted: 07/19/04 - 09:17 Post subject: Since "someone else" did it...My vacation report
No calling out names or anything robp!
So, last Sunday we headed out for our yearly vacation to our timeshare in VA Beach. VA Beach is a home away from home for us so this particular vacation is very restful. We aren't busy trying to see all the sights, go to all the shows, etc. Just fun and relaxing.
Every single day we went to the beach AND the pool. My son has always been able to swim but the two weeks of swimming lessons in early June really did help him a lot at the beach this year. We bought some boogie boards and did a lot of wave catching (granted, they were East Coast "waves" and all!).
Sunday night there were tornado warnings out but nothing major happened. Monday night there were severe thunderstorm warnings out with MAJOR lightening - it was a gorgeous storm from our oceanfront timeshare and I got much of it on tape. I love a good storm!
Every single day I watched the Tour de France and gained a brand new appreciation for biking (and Lance, of course!). I now know the meaning of the words I have never heard before such as "peleton!" I don't have cable at home (who needs it, right?) and I'm freaking out about what to do tomorrow for the BIG MOUNTAINS!!! I have already called a friend, though, and I think I'm heading to her house every day for the remainder of the Tour!
I did my first "long-long" run since last fall (17 miles) and my knee still feels fine!!! It was a hard 17 miles, though, because I have been so "on again/off again" with my training due to my knee issues. Plus, the humidity at the beach didn't help things. But, I got through it and was able to go out that afternoon and do some other stuff.
Since we go there every year many of the things we did were just "routine" for us but something we did new was go on a sunset dolphin cruise. My son was a little frightened by the boat at first (he thought it was going to be a speed boat) but he was fine once we started cruising around the ocean. We saw some amazing dolphins and took some great photos!
By the end of the week my son had learned how to do tricks with his scooter. I'm getting really scared he will be an extreme sport athlete!!!
Our last day at the beach was somewhat bittersweet. Some good friends of ours live at the beach now and we see them once or twice a year when we visit. This year, however, they had to take their vacation during the same week as us so they weren't in town until our last day there. They called us on Sunday just as I was checking out of the timeshare and we went to their house for a couple of hours. It is one of those situations where the husbands get along, the wives get along, and the kids get along (HARD to find these days) so we always enjoy spending time with them. Well, when it was time for us to leave their son, John, was so disappointed he ran away from where we were standing to another part of their yard. My son walked over to him, talked for a few seconds, and then gave him a big, long hug. It brought tears to my eyes!!! John and Joshua (my son) get along so well and neither of them have a friend like that at home. Both of them were pretty sad and both of the mom's were pretty sad, too, because we know what good friends we all are! So, we have made plans to come back again in about a month for a longer visit!
It is nice to be home and back to the normal routine but I'm already missing the ocean!

I can't stand a mess so...YES!!! I washed dishes and swept the floor every day. We don't eat out much when we go to VA Beach. We go to the commissary on the first day and cook the rest of the week. My husband loves to cook and doesn't get to do it much at home due to his work schedule so we typically eat better than normal during vacation. So, he cooked and I cleaned.
Every year my husband makes up some "vacation rule" on our way to the beach. Last year his rule was "everyone will exercise every day" (no big deal to me - I do that on a NORMAL week!). This year he made the same rule and I said "how is that different for me?" So, he changed the rule to "We will eat little to no meat this week - we'll mainly eat fruits and veggies." I'm not a big meat eater but the "mainly fruits and veggies" thing was a little harder. I can live on fruit but I'm not too much of a veggie fan! I had several meals of portabello mushroom sandwiches which were yummy, though. The big temptation comes from the fact that Dairy Queen is LITERALLY touchable from our timeshare (the buildings are that close). I went the whole week with only ONE blizzard!!! And, I only had one piece of chocolate (a KitKat bar) toward the end of the week ("Aunt Flo" came for a visit if you know what I mean!). I figure that is pretty good for a whole week of vacation!
