We have 2 representatives who accuse each other of removing signs...problem is, a few years ago one of the canidates was pulled over, and in the back of his truck were yard signs of his opponet.
Maybe President Bush has be frequenting your neighborhood!

Well, I think the thinking is two-fold. Yes, there's an ideology going on, sort of a group identity connection. But it's also advertising, like the more you'll see it, the more that name will be on your mind. Pols do this all the time--I'm sure you've walked into an election site and been handed a flier that has little more than a candidate's name on it.
But ads don't work if you're not in the market for that product, and they don't work if you already have another brand in mind, unless there's some spectacular deal or something. And even if there is some spectacular deal going on in this election (there isn't, incidentally), it's not like you'd know about it from reading a Kerry/Edwards or Bush/Cheney sign.

I agree you may walk in and vote for someone after seeing their name on a sign...I've done it before.  But, for president of the US I see no reason why we (they) should be wasting their money! Seriously. Everyone knows who is running for Pres (at least they have heard of Bush or Kerry) and there should be no real reason for signs!

On my commute to work, I've seen destruction to both sides' signs. Some Bush-Cheney ones were shredded yesterday and a few streets over there was black spray paint on a couple Kerry ones. I always thought the whole sign thing was stupid and people who put them up were begging for their houses to be vandalized, either by punk kids with nothing better to do, or the opposing side's resident freaks who had nothing better to do.
Sign me....

around here it's practice to steal a bunch of signs of one of the candidates, and then plant them all in the yard of someone who has a sign of another candidate in their yard.
So, they wake up to a field of horrors.

I haven't seen any destruction of signs nor am I aware of stealing are my area. Signs are MARKETING plain and simple. Go to it candidates... the masses need the signs!

The purpose of yard signs isn't really to create name ID. The purpose is to create the impression that eveyone, or at least the majority, in a given area are voting for a candidate. It is called the "sign war," as in "so-and-so is really winning the sign war on the westside." For many races, signs are necessary because your supporters demand them because they want to be able to show support, and this is especially true in Presidental races.
Stealing signs is a tradation dating back to probably the first time a sign was ever staked into the ground. Know what those big 4X8 wooden signs are good for? Cutting up into skirting around a mobile home...I've seen that done many times.

I had two signs in my yard for two candidates I really, truly believe in until they were removed by someone. One was Republican, another Democrat. Confused the neighborhood  . But one of said candidate's team removed the opposition's signs from a public area, which was funny. Not so funny when they were removed from people's homes.

That's what I ws thinking driving to work today: "boy, this is a real strong Bush area here" because of the number of signs along my commute. Granted, that's one small town in one state, but I guess along the lines of what Alan is saying, it might give hope to one side or another and "maybe" if you weren't going to vote because you felt your candidate didn't really have a chance, could this sway you to get out there? Just a thought, I'm not sure it would for me or not. I mean in the context of "the polls say so and so is 7 points behind" so you think, it's hopeless, why vote? But then you see whole neighborhoods filled with so and so signs and think, well, maybe not.....that's kind of an exaggeration but you get my point.

ALRIGHT IT WAS ME!
I stole two political signs before the primary of a candidate I wasn't voting for. There were 6 of those signs on that corner though.
The signs were then put to GOOD use. I stapled lemonade stand signs over the plastic candidate tag and I reused them for the garage sale.
I'm sorry.

did not see any Bush Cheyney signs in Philly yesterday as I was driving through Germantown. Though I not expect to see many.
Here in RT land, we are getting flooded with calls from signs of both parties being stolen.
I want this to be over now.
