In my neighborhood, which is pretty lefty (go figure!), someone was walking around stealing Kerry/Edwards signs off of people's lawns. It's not the first time it's happened, in the past I know of at least one incident in which the signs stolen were for a Republican candidate for mayor. The people from whose lawn the sign was stolen this time created a banner, which runs over the street widthwise, which says "Bush, you can steal our lawn signs, but you can't steal the election--again!"

Here are my thoughts:
1. It's pretty gutless to remove signs from one's private property, besides also being trespassing. The marketplace of ideas is what we're all about in a democracy.
2. I don't think it was a concerted Republican effort to rid the area of Kerry supporters. I'm sure it was some kids who did it.
3. I wonder whether the ones posting the banner got permission from the city to hang something over the street.

1. I've seen a couple of pro-Bush signs in my area that have had a large brown X across them. I'm gonna say that it's brown spray paint because i don't like the alternative.

2. Probably not, but the response is hella funny.

3. Again, probably not.

In my area when i drive home from work on the interstate there have been homemade political signs hanging from the overpasses (well, they've been attached to the fencing up there). Most of them don't bother me, except for one which read: Take this down if you hate America.

That one bothered me and i wanted to take it down just for the teremity of putting it up.

They probably all ended up in one lawn.... I think I recall a few incidents like that in my youth.... except all the signs ended up on the school lawn.

Yeah but in my day they were all 'for sale' signs, and most of them ended up on the lawns of people we wished would move.

Maybe we just were never deviant during election season!

I'll be up in your neck of the woods tomorrow. Hopefully they don't steal my car with my Dubya sticker on it

We took the For Sale signs also.... Mr. Green I think there were close to 200 signs on the front lawn of the high school after Senior Prank Night.... and I don't remember how the heck we accomplished it but the flagpole (minus flag) had old tires stacked up the entire length of it.

Seems like it's widespread. Neutral

Ok some of those people are freaks, if not possibly dangerous.

But this is kind of funny.

"Pennsylvania Democrats have threatened to spread itching powder on signs to keep the opposition at bay, and an Illinois family last week covered their yard sign with petroleum jelly to repel thieves. "

Here is a headline from today's local newspaper...

Bush-Cheney signs disappearing from yards

The story's lead is about all you need to know:

After someone stole his (Ted Rittenmeyer) second President Bush sign last weekend from the lawn of his Court Street home, he put up a sign of his own.

It read: "To the crooked, liberal S.O.B. who stole our Bush-Cheney signs, bring them back." LOL

The whole premise is based on the notion that advertising works, and I'm not sure that it does.

Is putting up the signs really advertising or is it just showing allegiance/support to a candidate?

It helps to create brand (candidate) recognition.

And that works in a local, perhaps even statewide election. But national?
