Let's not just stop with Clowns. I'm coming out and admitting it, I just have no use at all for Halloween anymore. Couldn't care less, wouldn't do a damn thing to even acknowledge 10/31 if I didn't have two little girls and a neighborhood full of young'uns expecting loot.
I like the origins of halloween, and ethnic/cultural variations like Dia de los Muertos type things, but as far as big, commercial, secular, plastic-Jack-o-Lantern-candy bucket Halloween goes, it's lame in my book.
Who else is with me? Stand and be heard.
Or if you love Halloween, why? Childhood memories, ghost stories, lots of leftover Smarties packs around the house?

I alternately love and hate it for the same reason.
Because I live as close to Salem, MA as one can live without actually being in Salem.
Traffic is miserable this time of year, but the historical aspect of the Witch Trials is pretty cool.

I'm with you, Rex. Halloween can just go away.
I am very intrigued with Dia de los muertos! I am trying to get a work trip scheduled down to Mexico for the 2nd of November. Very interesting.

I love Halloween! Its the only reason to dress up in costume and eat copious amounts of sugar for absolutely no reason!
although as a kid I was convinced it was all because of Martin Luther and the reformation...yes, I'm pretty messed up...

Celtic hatahs! From historychannel.com:
| Quote: | Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.
To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.
By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas. |

When other than the ween do you get to be anything you want for a day and nobody thinks its funny or odd?
Wanna be a monster with big ears and a droopy nose? No problem.
Wanna get dressed with almost no clothes on and go out in public. No problem.
Last year Lucy made Adam and Eve costumes. I wore a velvet fig leaf front and back. I wrapped a plastic snake around my arm and plugged my belly button with plastic and that was it. Add in a long black wig. Lucy wore a fig leaf front and back and two up top and that was it for her costume.
Best costumes ever.
I love the ween.

THIS kind of stuff is why I like Halloween, having been involved in theater in high school. You get to act like a wacko and nobody cares. Although I always stressed over getting dressed up, could never find "the" perfect costume because I always had to make one up. One year I went as Hell's Angel...I dyed angel wings black and did the whole Goth makeup thing, complete with black dress, studded collar and bracelets and biker boots, that was cool. I love the makeup part especially cuz I am really good at theatrical makeup. My favorite costume was the Alien Fertility Goddess where one side of my face was gold and one was silver, accented with black.
We should have a post pics of your favorite costume Halloween Fubby!
