For me it was disillusionment with the doctrine, that and a gradual (and still developing) belief that there is no All Knowing All Seeing God. I know that a person’s individual faith and their individual church community can be an amazing source of strength and support; however, I also believe divisions between religions and churches are responsible for a lot of heartache in this world. I don’t want to be a part of that.

I don't shun organized religion entirely. Shunning implies too negative an action for me. To answer the question though... I don't agree with some of the doctrine. The associated guilt is a byproduct of the doctrine issue but not a reason that I chose not to subscribe to it.
Compared to most people that I know, I think that I'm not typical in my reason. Those people have particular events that have caused them to indeed shun organized religion.

There is no pew, including the one I sit in, without hypocrits or sinners, that's the catch. |
that's what my grammie always told me...we are all equal in sinning. I stopped going to church when I moved away from her. My parents had stopped going years previously as my mother blamed the church for her having too many children to handle

For some I'm sure it's due to having religion shoved down their throat without time to consider what they value and believe. They go through the motions and do the sign of the cross because that was their "training".
I cannot tell you how many friends I have who have dropped Catholicism due to this.

In part I agree with Jrjo. It is about priorities. Every organization we belong to has the type of people who do things that embarrass or anger us. Whether it is the Democratic party or the Republican party or this denomination or that denomination. This club or that club. You get the idea.
So, faith(rather than use the term "religion") is about what we put into it and ergo what we get out of it. It should not be dependent on the loudmouths and p-i-a's that try to run the show.
I have always felt that those that scream the loudest about a "sin" or point out your wrongs are the ones that are hiding something. I have a relative that has done a great deal to turn my father away from believing in Christ--due to the negativity and extremism he spouts at my dad.
That being said, I have issues with some of the doctrine, I have problems with lagging faith, and I definitely have issues with some of the loudmouths. That has caused me to want to leave the church. So, I think those things do turn people off. But, bottom line, it's a personal relationship between you and God. Whether you choose to believe or not, go to church or not, bottom line it's a personal choice. Nobody should influence that decision, it should be one made on study and learning and your heart.

Just for clarification, the above is mainly me talking to myself. The very things Bam mentions I have struggled with a lot. So, I need to remind myself constantly that it is not about anyone else's actions or behavior. It is about me and my choices and behaviors.
