School has been in for a week now, and so far the kids have had only 1 full day of school. Our school does not have air condition and they say it gets too hot in the classroom. Hubby says I'm a hard a$$ but I think they should be going all day. Air conditioned schools when I went was a myth. Heck we didn't even have it at home. I don't recall people kicking over or anything. So what say you?

I think I agree with you. We never had air conditioning either, and we never got to go home because of the heat. I remember getting all sweaty and slipping on those plastic chairs, and having outdoor recess held indoors. But on the flip side, with parents being so willing to sue the school district if their little precious is the slightest bit uncomfortable, perhaps the schools are wise to avoid costly lawsuits and major headaches from the potential newspaper headlines.

It is ridiculous. Kids should be able to tough it out.

I remember going to school when it was 105. My dad taught at my high school, and when I complained he had no sympathy. Methinks a lot of kids today could use MORE sweating.
Out of curiousity, how hot HAS it been out there, achey?

I for one hate to be hot. cannot get anything done. Here in NC today, it's going to be brutally hot. If my kids didn't have AC in their schools, I'd keep them home. It's too hot, even with fans & windows open. It's so hot that they're giving away fans to our elderly, and warning that it's an orange ozone day and that you shouldn't be out if you don't need to be...
So I disagree with the majority here. Keep them home when it's too hot if their classes don't have AC.

I didn't have air conditioned schools when i was a kid, and one year we had some classes in outdoor sheds called "portables". They weren't very cool...

teaching in a school with no air conditioning...
let me say this...
sometimes it is a good thing. We have cancelled school because of the heat before, not this year yet.
Sometimes I don't think it is needed, but I guess that is up to the administration.

Yeah ok. But we also didn't wear helmets or pads when we rode our bikes, and we didn't have to wear seatbelts because it was a law. Just because something was or wasn't done in "our" youth, doesn't mean it was right. Right?
Our house gets up to 80 and I'm sweating bullets (I'm an air nazi--our electric has gotten out of control so I conserve when hubby is gone). We have lots of shade. I'd hate to think what a big fat school's temps get up to. Plus, kids don't get to carry water bottles around, have to wear certain clothes--I know in IN they couldn't wear shorts & didn't have AC, so there's much more room for them to get overheated than the average adult might.

High 90's. It was supposed to get to 100 one day but I don't remember if it did or not.
I agree. Sometime's I can see why other countries hate us. We're a bunch of whining sissies.

I'm not complaining because I didn't have that luxury. I'm complaining because that's what it is. A luxury. I really don't believe the kiddo's would have any ill effects from sitting in a classroom all day. Also it's a royal pain in the ass to have to figure out from day to day if school is letting out early and what your going to do with your kid at the very last second!!

we are also forgetting that when we were younger MOST schools started after Labor Day. Now we are starting school before summer is "officially" over.
not much learning is going on in a room that is 80 degrees or over.
the potential for lawsuits is another factor. err on the side of safety.
it seems silly to cancel school because of heat but it is even sillier that we start school at a time when the heat can be at its worst.

The A/C broke here at work a month or so ago and it was 100 outside and Omega Lambda and I were forced to work in a room with windows that don't open and it was so hot and we were sure sure sure we were going to melt into little puddles on the floor but guess what?!
We survived.

That's it? I've run in hotter than that. So when will my work be cancelled because it's too hot to walk from my car into my building?

Amen, sistah friend. Makes you wonder how people in the 1800s survived, what with no air conditioning, heavy clothes from neck to ankle, and outdoor labor.
