How is that NOT a violation of fire code???

Yes. We did it, they can do it. A lot of people LIVE without AC, so I have no sympathy.

My thoughts exactly.
Our school had money for air conditioning but they spent the money on new playground equipment.

The building won't spontaneously combust if there are no opening windows or A/C, but it will be hot. Most of the fire codes I know about actually have to do with something catching on fire.

It's not New Castle or Seatack Elementary is it?
'Cause if it is, they budgeted too much for the roof deck and couldn't afford A/C or windows that open. Oh the guilt. |
It's not New Castle. Where's Seatack Elementary? The one I'm referring to is Blue River Valley. They don't have AC because it was supposed to be renovated over the summer. They are waiting opon a part that is on back order.

Ha, ha, ha. Windows that don't open seem like blocking an escape route. I assume you have not seen "The Breakfast Club". Since you haven't seen any non-kid movies in the last 20 years, I bet I'm right. Or are they afraid the kids will jump out the windows?

Our school in Joisey used to get written up by the fire marshalls if the teachers so much as put their purse on the shelf in front of the windows. It's considered blocking egress.

The school was built back in the 60's. It was probably grandfathered into the new building code.

Yes. We did it, they can do it. A lot of people LIVE without AC, so I have no sympathy. |
In college, I lived in a dorm for 4 years without AC (one year was spent right above the kitchen). My new house does not have AC. I grew up on a farm and am used to working outside all summer so I can get by without AC. Many kids today don't work on the farm or spend time outside. Instead, they are used to spending all day in their house with AC. So to make them suddenly adjust to warmer, more humid temperatures and expect them to learn would be difficult.
Another thing. When did you guys (and gals) start school? Wasn't it in September when the temperatures are cooling down? Blue River started school on August 11th. THAT'S ALMOST JULY! They keep pushing the school year further into the summer. The school boards are facing budget issues, but instead of starting later, they start earlier, pay more for AC, and release classes in May while it is still cool. If they would just push the start of school back a few weeks, they would save $$$ on AC in the fall and when the students were release in June, it still wouldn't be very hot out. Sorry. Rant over.

I went to school in South Texas without AC. Started end of August. South Texas is HOT!!!
I currently live without AC. When it gets to a certain temp within the house, I don't/won't do anything because it is toooooo dang hot.

"Children thermoregulate quite effecitvely in normal to moderate conditions with appropriate clothing and rehydration but have reduced ability to adapt to temperature extremes. In a hot environment, children show less heat dissipation than adults because of a lower sweat rate and evaporative heat loss and a greater heat production per kilogram of body weight. Children also acclimate to heat more slowly than adults. In a cold enrironment, the high surface area-to-body mass ration of children can accelerate heat loss, increasing their risk of hypothermia."1

I guess that settles it Mindy
as far as fire code...from what I know, there is nothing in the BOCA code or local codes about windows having to open. There are many office buildings with permanently shut windows also., but they have A/C.
