It is 100 here right now. And I have a hill workout today at 5:45. But I am used to the heat, I have acclimated through the summer. We had a/c when I was in school, so we never had a day cancelled due to heat. I can see where if they took kids who are not used to this kind of heat and kept them in a hot room for hours surely some of them would suffer some sort of heat related illness.

lethargy seems to be the most common ailment. and it's often difficult to tell which ones are suffering and which ones are just naturally lethargic

personally, I thought today was "too wet" to have school. lot's of rain, thunder and lightening here this morning, and the electricity kept going off and on.
Really, do they think we can do 5 days the first week of school. We need a snow day! (or at least a weather-related cancellation) c'mon, throw me a bone

Here's my take on it: it is usually not as hot the 1st week of June as it is the last week of August. that last week of school in June is pretty much party time: not much learning is happening. there are picnics and parties and special events. No one is expected to be writing theses and doing difficult math problems. The first week of school is really a work week, and the concentration is barely there anyway, without adding a heat factor.
I'm saying that it is lame to cancel school for the heat, but I understand why they would do it. It just makes better sense to me to start school later. |
I agree with this. And I also agree with Brie on the amount of days they get off. It does seem like a lot.

My cut off is 95°F for running. Past that, I'll pick a different activity.

Both of my parents grew up in Houston with no A/C in either of their houses. One year when we were living in KY I got off 1 day of school because it got up to be 105 (unusual for KY) in the beginning of September since nearly half the district didn't have A/C. My mother had a heyday with that one talking about how wimpy we all were and called all of the family in Texas. I do remember thinking it was a little dumb but didn't mind the day off.
I don't know, I'm not a parent but I do think its a little over the top. Its amazing how many things are dictated by a lawsuit or fear of one.

I used to teach in Ohio where there wasn't AC in the classrooms. I had fans running in all corners of the classroom, kids loaded with water bottles and even damp towels for the necks. It was still hot and miserable. I hated the first weeks of school and the fact that teachers were not allowed to wear shorts. You put 26 bodies in one room and it's awful! Not to mention stinky with 6th graders who didn't wear deoderant. I couldn't figure out why they couldn't invest in AC when renovations came around. Not a lot of learning took place. The kids just moped around and were lugs at time.

An elementary school close to the one I work for has been closing at 1:30 because of the heat. They don't have AC and the windows do NOT open.
Do you really think that if it is getting to be over 85 or 90 degrees with no air flow, that a 8 year old should be sitting in a classroom?

It's not New Castle or Seatack Elementary is it?
'Cause if it is, they budgeted too much for the roof deck and couldn't afford A/C or windows that open. Oh the guilt.

Truthfully, I'd be more worried about the teachers in these situations. Keeping 20+ kids under control is hard in the best of times, but I can't imagine in hot weather. We're not talking just older kids--we're talking kindegarten which is known for its high energy.
Also, special needs classes--like Autism--really do need special consideration both for the teachers and students. The autistic classes can be very physically demanding for the teachers.
