i can remember school being cancelled in NC due to "heat index"--and it was really hot; i thought at that time it was warranted.
however, our high school is just completing a 35M renovation and the air conditioning is not up and running yet. my son is despondent over the lack of AC ..... i suppose no one wants to drink the cappucinos in their new cafe when it's so bloody hot
KIDS THESE DAYS. sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.

not much learning is going on in a room that is 80 degrees or over.
the potential for lawsuits is another factor. err on the side of safety.
it seems silly to cancel school because of heat but it is even sillier that we start school at a time when the heat can be at its worst. |
Yeah I know. But since it is such a big problem maybe they should go back to starting after labor day. But then it would be too hot when they were still in school in June. I don't know about the learning Kelt.... I agree it was uncomfortable but I don't remember it affecting my learning any more than any other distraction.

Right. But I don't think sitting in a classroom that's uncomfortably warm is an issue of safety for the most part while seatbelts and helmets are.

I'm not complaining because I didn't have that luxury. I'm complaining because that's what it is. A luxury. I really don't believe the kiddo's would have any ill effects from sitting in a classroom all day. Also it's a royal pain in the ass to have to figure out from day to day if school is letting out early and what your going to do with your kid at the very last second!! |
I can see where the kids missing school would be an issue for a working parent. I forget about that, forgive me, because I've not been a working parent for quite some time. I do remember though snow days really messing up my life.
So yeah, I see that. My attic has little ventilation, and no air. It's SWELTERING up there. I wouldn't want the kids to be in that kind of environment. That's all I'm saying. If it is too hot, and it is here in NC today anyway, close the school, or allow them to carry around their water & wear shorts & tank tops. That of course brings on a whole new set of problems though.
I do feel for you and all the parents who have to make alternate plans at the last moment. Not cool, and not easy.

We don't have air conditioner in our home. It gets up to 100+ where we are some days. It is darn hot in our house. Colin's school has AC, though.
I went to school in South Texas and our elementary school didn't have AC. It was hot, sticky, and sweaty. But, I survived.
I have no point. Just rambling. Must be the heat.

You know, the problem is the holidays and days off. I remember starting school after labor day, and getting out before memorial day. Kids will be in school 2 weeks with their first day off being labor day, then here in charlotte my kids have oodles of days off--much more than they did in the midwest. Cut down christmas break, get rid of spring break or cut it considerably, and get rid of all the non-essential days off. My kids have 3 days off for thanksgiving. Nice, sure. But it's at least 1 too many, and every day off does count...
I'm all for year-round school. They only have to attend 180 days, so take those and spread them out throughout the year, leaving the kids home at the hottest time during the year so the school doesn't have to worry about the heat. Or in the cooler areas, during the thick of winter when snow-days are most probable.
But then that's just me.

Your attic is a completely different type of construction than a school building. Schools have thick block walls that help regulate the temperature much better than your house probably can. The school is probably better insulated too.

I for one am an AC wuss. I've mentioned at least 100 times on this board how I hate the heat....but school should be in session. My wonderful state...Texas, has a time cut off where the students/school get credit for attendance. It's second period which ends at 10:45. If the heat is that bad, put them on the late arrival schedules, have class where at least some learning can be done, and get them home before the heat of the day.
I do have to side with Brie on one thing. If it's a heat emergency and the air levels are that poor then parents should be the ones to make the decision.

I just came back in from running for an hr. (tempo run too). It's currently 90°F (Feels Like 94°F ) with 52%RH and we've got a code orange smog alert going on. I lived.

starting after labor day does put the kids in school into the month of june. last year we started the week before labor day and because of all the snow days we were in school through the first week of june. Here's my take on it: it is usually not as hot the 1st week of June as it is the last week of August. that last week of school in June is pretty much party time: not much learning is happening. there are picnics and parties and special events. No one is expected to be writing theses and doing difficult math problems. The first week of school is really a work week, and the concentration is barely there anyway, without adding a heat factor.
I'm saying that it is lame to cancel school for the heat, but I understand why they would do it. It just makes better sense to me to start school later.
